Hi I would like to learn to quilt. Can anyone tell me what supplies I would need to get started? Is there a good book out there for people just getting started? I have a basic sewing machine. Is this good to start or will I need to purchase a better one? Any advise I could get would be appreciated.

A basic sewing machine is just fine. You also need fabric (100% cotton is the usual stuff) and something to cut with. You can do with scissors, but if you can justify spending on a cutting mat (18" x 12" at least if possible), a rotary cutter and a ruler (4" or 6" by at least
14") you will find you can cut faster and more easily.I highly recommend you find the rec.crafts.textiles.quilting newsgroup and ask the same question there. Also which country are you in? I am guessing the US from your email address, but that information will affect which shops are recommended for you - my favourite UK ones won't be very convenient!

welcome to quilting, its addictive. the best thing you can do is find a local quilt shop. they will be so helpful to everything you need.basic sewing machine is all you will need, a walking foot is very useful for binding and machine quilting.there is an amazing quilt chat room full of helpful quilters
