Where to buy fabric online?

Hi, everyone. I'm new and haven't sewn in many years. I just bought a new sewing machine - my first in decades...and have come to find out there aren't a lot of fabric stores out there anymore. Anyone know good places on line to buy quality fabric, buttons, etc.? Thanks so much!

Your posting host tells me you're in Florida, USA. I have probably 100s of fabric sites bookmarked, but I would want to know what kind of sewing you are trying to locate fabric for. Quilting? Women's or men's apparel? Baby stuff? Home Dec? etc....

Where are you? I'm in the UK, and we have members stretching from the Australian Outback to the wilds of Katmandu... Via France, South Africa, South America, and possibly Greenland and Antarctica!

Personally, I've bought fabric from Finland, the USA, Scotland, and just up the road here... Patterns from Oz, and buttons from local charity shops.

Where do you WANT to shop?

Hi, there. I'd love to shop in my own hometown but we only have one fabric chain here - Jo Ann Fabric. They're good but they really have no competition so I don't know if I'm getting a deal or getting ripped off. I'm in Pennsylvania. I'm willing to get fabric wherever I can get good quality for a decent price - and a good selection. Any and all ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You could start with wwww.fabric.com. They have a variety of fabrics. I've always been satisfied with the selection I've gotten from them. I also suggest that as people post locations to buy fabric you look and see what they have and if it suits your needs. Serge has put up some really nice locations for you.If you are unsure it's best to get a sample first. Most important though is for us to know what type of sewing you want to do and then we can try to steer you in the right direction. Welcome to the group and enjoy your return to sewing. Juno

I have had some good stuff from

They are basically a discount house, and also have some very good sales, so their sale stuff might give you a few decent pieces to be going on with. I have made quite a number of "everyday" clothes from that, but also have some "good stuff" ready to cut into after I get the patterns altered to exactly how I want them.

Don't forget you've also got JoMar in Philadelphia... and G Street in the DC area. And the NY garment district.

Some of the bigger stores offer a swatching service and/or a fabric club, like Vogue in Illinois:

(note trial issues at the bottom of that page -- and you'll have to paste the URL back together.).I sew a lot of shirts, so I buy ordinary shirt buttons by the gross at placeslike Atlanta Thread and Banasch's -- that's a huge savings over buying cardedbuttons.

You might also want to pick up some of the sewing magazines that are still around like Threads and Sew News and Sew Beautiful and look at the advertisers there. Threads puts their ad index online:

of us also belong to one or more fabric coops... here's one I'm a memberof:

If you want cottons of good quality, try eQuilter.com. Paul & Luanne Rubin own and operate the store in Boulder, CO for years, beginning in the basement of their home. Before the business really got too big, Paul used to post on here. I began buying fabric from them years ago, when I was searching for special designs for my eldest DGD. No, I am not affiliated with the business, except for being a very satisfied customer.

Another site I often use is Nancy's Notions. She has some fabulous linens, knits and blends of excellent quality.

I think is the correct address. In fact, she has a clearance sale online now. Neither am I affiliated with her business, except I am a satisfied, loyal customer of many years, & have never been disappointed.

they are based in London but ship all over the world. The fabrics are premium quality and I know for a fact that they supply fabric for costume designers working on major Hollywood film productions. They also supply TV shows and theatre productions in Londons West End, as well as all over the world. They have

3 physical shops in London too so they are very experienced and have extremely knowledgable staff. Well worth a look, and if you can't find what you are looking for send them an email - they will fall over themselves to help you out. Hope that helps!

regards,

Dave

My pleasure. Funny, how "Dave" snipped-for-privacy@mortoncarnie.com hasn't come back to deny that he is the owner/registrant of that web site. A little more digging (on the domain name mortoncarnie.com in his e-mail address) yielded:

Domain name: MORTONCARNIE.COM

Administrative Contact: Morton, Dave snipped-for-privacy@btinternet.com

I hope snipped-for-privacy@btinternet.com, AKA snipped-for-privacy@mortoncarnie.com rots in spammer hell.
