lavender for sachets - where to buy?

Does anyone know where you can get some dried lavender flowers for making sachet bags? I've checked out Michaels and a few gardening stores but am coming up empty. I can buy overpriced, badly made sachets from lingerie stores, but I'd prefer to get the bulk flowers as I've made a bag myself... Suggestions are appreciated! TIA, Jeanine in Canada

Hello Jeanine

Pity you are not closer, Lavender grows like a weed here, and I have several prolific bushes that are pruned into hedges. If it is not a prohibited import I'd be delighted to dry some and send it to you. It is one of those marvellous plants that survives with very minimal water. Whilst this is not a gardening group, I'd love to tell you about the wonderful blue and white agapanthus flowers I've had this year. The colours are so calming, and it is wonderful to see a healthy plant and know it has had almost no water other than the little (and I mean very little) that falls from the sky.

Hi Jeannine! Have you tried the herbalists and "Body Shops"? Here in Brussels it's where I can easily find Lavender flowers and/or oil to use in "drawer sachets", hot bath, humidifier(for central heating), steam iron, etc..! The oil can be a bit expensive but I only have to use a drop or two, so...For the flowers, I sometimes bring a bagful with me from my holidays in the south ! Not al all expensive ;-) Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you! Sofia D

If you're not totally fixated on lavender, some kind of pot pourri (however that's spelled) might work.

Have you tried natural foods stores or tea shops? Those are both places I've bought bulk lavendar flowers in the past. (Granted that was in the States. I've only been in Canada for 6 mos. and haven't really gotten the lay of the land yet...)

Try this place. They have marvelous products available, and the lavender is strongly scented. If this url doens't work, just go to

and click on the bouquet to enter, then click on the scents button, go to the second page. Good luck!

Thanks everyone, I found an online place not far from here (same province, just on the Island) so I guess I could order from them... really just wanted to go out and pick it up. I'm finishing my EAC Casalguidi pouch and it calls for lavender... I never thought it would be a problem to get it so I didn't look for it when I bought the other supplies. Deadline is looming now... Happy Holidays to everyone! Jeanine in Canada

I know where *I* can get it -- the farmers market. There's a lavender farm nearby which puts out a variety of products, including lav-scented bedsheet spray for a good night's sleep.

I know, I know, you are not commuting distance from here, nor is the farmers market open at this time of year. However, you could google for a lavender farm near you.

Call and ask if you could pick it up. I occasionally e-mail order from somewhere local (literally a mile away), and she's even willing to drop it off for me on her way home. Small businesses are often willing to make special arrangements that they don't list on the website.

Hi Jeanine,

I've bought lavender from the health food shop. It's easy to find, and very reasonably priced.

I haven't been following this thread until now so maybe it has been mentioned already, but -- wouldn't it just be simpler to fill the sachet with something else and use lavender oil? You can find that all over. Or even lavender bath beads, even more easily found.

I would try Richter's

can't find bulk lavender on their site, but if you contact them, they may be able to point you in the right direction. They are an absolutely wonderful Canadian source of everything herbal. MargW

Wow Marg that looks great - what a resource, thank you! Well, I found a bag of lavender flowers at an organic grocery store. It was sealed so I couldn't smell before buying but for $5.19Cdn/50g I took the chance. Got it home and it doesn't really smell all that much... or maybe I just had a different scent in my head? I expected it to smell more florally this kinda smells medicinal - not sure how to explain. The package says: "non-irradiated" why would you radiate lavender... bugs? Jeanine in Canada

Here in the Sticky South, lavender simply does not last - goes all horrid. So, instead of sachet, I just buy Yardley's Lavender soap, unwrap it and put it in all the linen closets, underwear drawers etc. Works a treat, and when it finally loses its scent I simply transfer it to the bathroom for use (by which time it has dried out nicely and doesn't dissolve so fast) and put new bars in the drawers.

Hi Jeanine,

I've made many lavender sachets over the years, and eventually the lavender does lose it's scent. I can't say it's real florally smelling. I have no idea what "non-iradiated" lavender is. I have 4 lavender plants in my yard, so that's what I use.

I prefer potpourri if I want a special scent, and have managed to find it at many places...bath shops, dollar stores, Michael's, etc. My favourite is the potpourri I've bought at Evelyn & Crabtree...very nice.

take care, L>Wow Marg that looks great - what a resource, thank you!
