bias in umbrella panels.

Hi, I've been assuming that as long as I lay my pattern out across, or in the web direction, it really doesn't make any difference, wrt to stretch in the finished canopy. Is this true, or should the panels be cut lengthwise, or crosswise, to the web direction? And, does it matter if they are all cut the same, i.e. lengthwise with the web or lenghwise across the web? Thanks, John

Material is strongest on its warp threads (length). It is not quite so strong on its weft threads (left to right weave). And you will have a time, I would think, dealing with diagonal (bias)cuts. Although, lampshades are sometimes made on the bias so that they hug the metal vertical bars.

Does that answer your question? Dianne

The weft will stretch some. Better to use warp along the ribs.

I hope your adventure is successful and that you have a wonderful holiday!
