New to the group and scrapping

Hi all,

I'm new to the group and also very new to the idea of scrapbooking. I am a genealogist and historian in hobby mainly but love to craft as well. I also am a desktop publisher/web designer by profession. But I finally decided enough was enough and I need to start doing something with all these photos and little mementos I've been collecting for years, and thus the interest in scrapbooking. I'm eager to learn more and get started but am looking for some basic help in where to go to get going. I have a few basic supplies (a "Slab II" from Michaels that was purchased actually for another project as well as a few other paper packages and of course lots of "scraps" of sample papers from my profession), but don't know where to begin... Any hints and tips would be most appreciated. Also websites to read up on and those sort of things would be helpful. Here's a little more about me to share with the group:

-Name: Christi B.

-Newsgroup Nick: CC

-Age: 30

-City/State: San Antonio, TX

-Married for 8 years to my wonderful Michael

-4 cats but no kids yet (although I'd love some of the water you all were talking about since we've had some problems in that area!)

-Hobbies: Singing, Writing/Journaling, Genealogy/Family Histories, Cooking and all sorts of crafting

-Self employed in desktop publishing/web design

Welcome to the group CC. You will love it here. I haven't read through your homepage yet but I do love the monkeys :) Too cute!!! Michaels is a great place to start :) as well as Local Scrapbook Stores. Another place is Wal-Mart :) Hope this helps a little bit.

Welcome CC! Im fairly new too. And after about just one week of being in the news group I have gotten so many new ideas. And i learned a lot too. Everyone is great help! I suggest that you buy some scrapbooking magazines. They sell mostly at book stores, but sometimes in your local food store. They are very neat! Hope you like it here!

Hey there Christi, welcome to the group! Since you're in a large enough town I know you'll be able to find a scrapbook store. Check your phonebook and give them a call, or better yet, drop in and check out their classes. A beginners class really does help alot. I like

Stick around long enough and maybe you'll get of that magic water! We seem to have had a baby boom as of late.

Hi CC, and welcome! Here are some of the basic necessities:

  1. album. You'll have to decide on size, such as 8.5x11 or 12x12. There are other sizes as well, not as popular. Then you need to decide on what brand and style of album, such as postbound, strap hinge, or 3-ring binder, from Creative Memories, Pioneer, K&Co., etc. There are pros and cons for each style, size, and brand. Just ask us if you have any questions.

  1. Cutting system. Along with a pair of good paper scissors, you will need a good cutter that will cut both straight lines and shapes from paper as big as 12x12. Everyone has their favorite, but some of the ones people here seem to like are Creative Memories, Fiskars, and Cutterpede.

  2. pens. At the very least you will need good pens of various colors and thicknesses. The best bet are pens with pigment ink, which will not bleed but are permanent. You can also add additional looks to your pages with gel pens, colored chalks, stamps and ink, metallic rub ons, and on and on.

  1. decorative elements. This means papers, stickers, eyelets, fibers, tags, charms, buttons, etc, etc, etc. There is an incredible array of items available to decorate your pages with.

Two additional things to remember; if you want to preserve your photos for many years, stick with archival quality items only. Also, journaling is key to a great scrapbook. Just think about what you want to remember or share about that person or event 25 years from now, and include that information on your page somehow.
