OT: Cakes!

I uploaded new cake pictures in my webshots today, in the cakes folder. Somehow the pics just dont do the cakes justice. The dinosaur cake looks SO much better IRL!!

Lovely cakes. I loved doing cakes. But, I liked making the decorations from sugar paste, etc. instead of buying plastic things. So my cakes were costly and a lot of people just wouldn't pay the price. So after a decade I stopped doing it.

I still do cakes every once in awhile. But, I like pie (fruit pie) better than cakes now. But, for a Birthday or something I will whip one up.

I absolutely love your cakes. I especially love the pizza cake. It would be perfect for my Dad's birthday.

You are so talented.

I showed your cakes to the kids. They loved the dino and the cat cake. DD wants to know if you can make a siamese cat cake. Sandy

Thank you Robert. I had no idea you used to do cakes! I would love to learn to use sugar paste and fondant. I have seen it on the Food Network and they were some fabulous looking creations! I work in a grocery store bakery, and we dont use that kind of stuff at the store, for exactly the reason you stated. People dont want to pay for what it costs, and the labor it takes to create them. Plus, not everyone I work with can do the things that I can, they have different skill levels, so I can't advertise to our customers "everything" I can do, because we all have to be able to offer things on the same skill level as everyone, for the days I am not there. I like to bake pies too! ;-)

My teacher at the time started us with the oven bake polymer clays. She said the consistency was close and that you could make from Sugar Paste anything you could make with the clay except that Sugar Paste you don't bake.

That is how I learned to do roses, forming the peddles by hand. Icing roses are different since they are done with a tip, but you apple the peddles in the same fashion. Row after row of odd numbered peddles, getting a little larger as you move out.

Cookie cutters are another good way to go with both the clay and sugar paste. Though I do like working with my hands the best. Though I did do my fare share of airbrushing on the sugar paste and cakes. Plastic templates work well for that too.

The best thing to do is make a batch and play. Its all in the fun!
