OT: Computer Woes

Ok, I need some guidance or help and wonder which of ya'll may be willing to ASSIST a impatient man in futzing with a consarned cotton pickin electronic gadget!!!

The stupid pc updated IE automatically yesterday to 7. I think the update said upgrade security package 7? Anyhow it is a mess and I am now having troubles. I finally got ALL of googgles toolbars off the desktop but am totally lost on what is there now. (I hate changes -DOH!)

Anyhow where the little rocket was on the toolbar. You could click on it and it let you change user accounts (I had three). Well it is gone now and I have no earthly idea where to change or sign in to my different accounts now.

Also now the mail browser will not let me open any links on it, for example I would send links from ya'll to the puter and open the links there (it was faster as I have DSL). Well now absolutely nothing happens when I click on forwarded links, the cursor just blinks, maybe WINKS at me. GGGRRRR!!

Also the pc will n ot go into hibernate mode now either.

So I am more than frustrated and wondering if you can reverse this update or what? I will more or less be gone till Friday afternoon so will look at options or ideas then Maybe two or three of ya'll that are smarter t than the average dweeb (ME!) have a couple different ideas first.

Thanks and now have something more to pray about (or curse?!) LOL!

((HUGS!!))

Dave, I'll point DH to this and see what he can do. You going anywhere tomorrow or Friday? (I'm not sure when he'll be home this evening, but if he can, maybe he can call you this evening.)

Hi Dave....

I recently upgraded to IE 7 and haven't had any issues so far, but, I tend to keep things simple on my computer to avoid conflicts. So, I don't have multiple user accounts (no need for it as I am the only one who uses this computer) But from your description, it sounds like it wreaked havoc on your computer. The one thing that I read before upgrading was that IE7 is uninstallable through the control panel. If I were you, I might consider uninstalling and/or performing a system restore. That system restore has saved me on more than one occasion.

IE7 does look SO different to me.. and I am one who doesn't like change as well. I miss my old "clouds" desktop wallpaper.

Good luck to you! And Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

You might be able to go back if you have a restore point prior to the installation. Start/Accesories/System Tools/System Restore.

I would advise you in the future either to disable the automatic update and just visit the windows update site once every week or two OR when it tells you to click to install updates chose custom rather than automatic. When you chose custom it will tell you what M$ wants to install on your pc and you can unchecked anything that you don't want.

Dave you can do a System Recovery if you are running Win XP. Click Start ---> All Programs ---> System Recovery ---> System Recovery.....when you start it choose a restore point date from the list given.... i.e. before the Update was made. It will restore everything back to what you had :o) You may also need to turn off the Automatic Updates feature in Control Panel....Security Center....or this will happen again. HTH

Hey all,

I'm Brad. Hubby to Deb in AR. Deb showed me the message from Dave about the problems with IE7 being on his PC and the problems he was reporting. I can honestly say, from previous experience, that you won't be able to run System restore and go back to a previously created restore point successfully. It will not remove programs from your computer. It will restore the Registry, user state hive, and critical system files. But it will not restore an internet browser. Here are the tried and true steps we have at our office for removal of IE7. I hope this helps.

1: Close all opened windows

2: Click Start

3: Click Control Panel

4: Click Add or Remove Programs

5: Scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7

6: Left click one time on the name to highlight it

7: Scroll to the right and left click on the Change/Remove button

8: Follow the on-screen prompts to finish removing it

9: You (* WILL *) have to reboot your PC when it's done
