John's been working on a contract job for the last six months and they said at the time that when his contract was up they'd take him on permanently, but neither of us was really counting on it - he's had some pretty shabby treatment since we were married and I've heard about the big companies that just keep turning over the temps because it's cheaper than providing benefits etc...
Anyway, it looks like our fears were unfounded. Compucom is a good company to work for, not a bad one. We already kind of knew that because they paid him for the week he was off work for the hurricane when they didn't really have to - and even better, instead of giving him a straight 40 hour week they just duplicated his last paycheck, which happened to include 9 hours of overtime! Yes we told them they'd made a mistake but his boss said 'don't worry about it, I'm sure you'll work hard enough to make it up'!
His supervisor said he'd be a perm at the end of this month but they moved it up a few weeks. He got the job offer on Friday afternoon and he's already sent it back and had his drug test etc... the best part is that he was willing to take eighteen dollars an hour, but they offered him nineteen off the bat! And as a permanent employee he can get bonuses and stuff for good performance, and he'll still get overtime and expense money (and a company credit card for the expenses so we don't have to wait six weeks to get them reimbursed). Hopefully now we'll be able to afford health insurance, because the only thing worse than trying to use American health insurance is not having it... and if we're lucky we'll be able to start saving and to try and get John's credit record straightened out.
