OT: movie "Super Size Me"

Has anyone seen this movie? I did last night and I'm just floored. During the movie my kids came in to ask for a snack and I told them they hit me at a bad time... only fruit and vegetables for a snack. The movie was PG-13, so I didn't have them watch not knowing why. Now I know day 17 I believe has some sex talk. OH and an exam picture in the beginning might be objectionable, but other than that I'm going to have my kids watch and learn. And maybe they'll believe me when I talk about the fat content in fast food and that's why we eat out so seldom.

I have seen that movie two times! It is GREAT...and sickening!! hehe It's absolutely disgusting what that stuff does to you! And the part about cafeterias in schools got to me too, its ridiculous the stuff that they offer kids in school now!! I think they should be showing that movie in schools, oh but wait...all of those fast food places and junk food people are sponsoring the schools...so I guess they wouldn't like that :P

The school lunch program really disturbed me too. When I was a kid you got a tray already served with helpings for the day and you ate or you didn't. Now they get to choose whether they want fruit or vegetables or whatever and I suspect not many choose that healthy. They get chocolate milk instead of plain is they want it. I'm just floored by what I saw. I'm not sure I want to see it again. haha

What did you think about the food in the jars experiment?

I saw this last week. First thing first. You have to remember the reason he gained so much is because he ate 3 meals a day at McDonalds. And he had to eat it all, and if they asked if he wanted them super sized, he had to take it that big. Anyone in their right mind won't do that. With the exception of that weirdo who eats 2 or 3 Big Macs PER DAY! Yuck! I like them now and then, but who can do that daily? And holy cow are your super sized meals ever HUGE! When he held up the fries at the beginning of the show in his car I almost fell over. That container looked way bigger than our super sized fries in Canada. Anyone else notice that? I can barely eat a regular serving of fries with a big mac or 1/4 pounder. Who can finish a super sized fries? And I love McD's fries. We only have one size of parfaits here too. Small, or small. LOL DD ordered a salad not too long ago and only put maybe 1/2 the salad dressing on it. She said the amount they give you is way too much and your salad ends up swimming in dressing. I think the dressing causes the most for calories and fat. I missed the experiment at the end, but my niece was over tonight and she was telling me how the french fries were perfectly preserved after 9 months of sitting in a jar. Yum! Preservatives. LOL I still eat at McD's, but only occasionally. I did have breakfast burritos the day after I watched the movie. Those are soooooooooo good. But only now and then.

I think that's the problem some people aren't in what we think is their "right mind." I agree it's not the food its the choices people make for themselves.

At the end of the movie they said he was only asked to "Super Size" his meal

5 times in the month. I thought that was strange... I thought they asked if you wanted to Super Size everytime you order. I have never Super Sized, because I can't eat that much food in one sitting, but my husband has. I have a friend and she and her husband Super Sized every meal. She was so heavy she couldn't get pregnant and had a gastric bypass. She has a baby now. When she wanted to lose weight I told her if she just cut out the soda she'd lose weight. She was drinking 4 of those gallon drinks of Dr. Pepper a day at least. She asked me to pick one of those drinks up at 7/11 for her once and I almost sprained my wrist carrying it to the car. She told me I was a big baby. haha

It's all the choices we make for ourselves. Why is it so darn hard to make the good choices??!! I don't eat at McDonald's often, but I'm still fat.

I'm a bit overweight myself and know what I'm doing wrong. I like my potato chips with onion dip and my dark caramilk chocolate bars. I drink pepsi too, but maybe only a 12 ounce glass now and then. I've really cut back on my pop consumption. I fry most of my meat, instead of broiling it and I love my margerine. If it isn't on a sandwich or my hamburger or hotdogs, they just don't taste the same. I fry all my meat in margerine too. I don't eat enough fruit, but it's so expensive in Calgary. I do love fresh veggies and we eat them as often as we can. But not often enough. And when I do eat brocolli or cauliflower, I smother it in cheese sauce. Bad, I know, but it tastes sooooooooo good. LOL I know I need to make better healthier food choices, but the flavour of the grease and sugar always gets me. It was easier to quit smoking than it is to change your eating habits.

As an ex smoker & now struggling to loose the 25 lbs I gained in the process I can vouche for that remark!

It was easier to quit smoking than it is to change your eating habits.

My DD#1 sent me a quote from a list she's on it went something like ......an alchoholic gets to put the tiger in a cage & throw away the key. A dieter has to take that tiger for a walk 3 times a day...

Thought that was catchy:>)

I'm also an ex smoker and agree whole heartedly. It was way easier to stop smoking! I love the quote!

That's a good quote. While an alcoholic can keep booze out of the home and thus out of his or her system, we still have to eat no matter what. And the temptations are too great. I need to lose the 30 pounds I put on since I quit smoking............ she says as she sits on the computer eating Cherry Blasters........

I think that wierdo sorta proves my point -- it IS possible to eat McDonald's everyday and be healthy. I don't think most of us would want to (I like a little variety in my diet, personally).

Nothing's wrong with a little fast food in moderation.

Interesting quote. I've been struggling with my weight as well, though I don't smoke. Can't stand the smell of cigarettes. bluuughh. But losing the weight is a common struggle many of us may have. I've really been trying harder lately. I'd like to lose about 60 pounds. And I've a long ways to go. I was hoping to be at a 14 by Christmas. And I have my doubts as to making it. I'm at an 18 right now. Though this time last year I was at a 22-23. So I guess that counts for something.

Way to go Jessie!!!! You didn't put it on quickly and unfortunately it doesn't come off quickly except through extreme measures. At the rate you're going, you will make it and you are more likely to maintian the loss when you get there.

thanks! I was down forty pounds. Started dating someone who wanted to do nothing but go out to dinner (and eat), or stay home watch t.v., or movies (and eat) and I put twenty back on real fast. Needless to say that relationship was short lived. I'm not comfortable with myself the way I am. And he wasn't motivated to do anything else, so I just quit returning his calls. Bump into him every now and then. He obviously is still not motivated, and that would only bring me further down and outward. Wasn't a healthy beginning so I ended it pretty quickly. Now I'm kinda back on track. I'm gonna turn into an orange, or a bottle of water any day now. Today I'm like this, tomorrow I may have gone through complete metamorphosis, and just be sitting next to the keyboard with no fingers to type with. I'll just be able to sit here and stare at the screen, rereading the same message over and over and over and over.

Thats great Jessie!! It is better to take it off slow, it's less likely to go back on that way, because it becomes a change in life style over a period of time. DD#1 & I are going to WW's. It's a great program for us:>)

Good luck & stick to it, that's the main thing & remember that everyday is a new beginning:>)

My mom has been trying to get me into the WW thing. But I just don't think it's for me. I just need more time to actually get out and move, more than I do in my normal everyday activities. I consider myself a pretty active person. But sometimes that's just not enough. I am working on it though. One of my favorite salads right now is from the Southbeach Diet book, using endame beans. When I make it that's all I eat for dinner. I love that salad. Let me know if you'd like the recipe. uuummmmm, yummy, yummy

Not sure what an "endame bean" is, but I love most salads. (Not crazy over dressing though, I prefer cottage cheese with mine):>)

WW has really changed alot. I'm following the point program, which works for me, because I have a slim hubby & DD#2 is model thin, so I cook normal foods at home. I'm not one to cook 2 separate meals, so a fad diet, would never work for me.

But good luck:>)

I think that it is great that you are down 4-5 sizes from last year. It shows that what you are doing is working for you. Most of the time people rebound and add more than they were before. So give yourself a pat on the back :-) I just know there is a man out there who is motivating himself to change his lifestyle right now....you just have to find him :-) Maybe see if there is a group of people that walk together in your neighborhood...you could make some new friends and excersise at the same time.

I don't know if i'd let my kids watch this film. There's something about this guy that rubs me the wrong way. I feel like he miscontrues facts to prove some petty, anticorporate point. I just don't get it.

I would rather my kids be confronted with the facts by themselves and make an opinion then rather than have one crammed down their throats.
