OT (sorta?) Outlook question

I know that most of you read the ng on outlook. I've got a new computer and I'm going to be switching over from webtv so I guess I'll need to get connected w/ them. How do you receive your messages? Is it e-mail like the yahoo groups or do you go to a webpage and read the messages like I do w/ webtv? Personally, I really don't like getting ng messages via e-mail. I prefer to have a site I can go to and scim over the topics choosing to read whichever catches my eye.

If some of you access the ng from another source I'd be interested in hearing about it. I already know about google. Had to use it some time back for awhile when my webby groups were acting up.

TIA for any input you can give!

You get newsgroups in outlook but down in a different section...not in your email section. They come in email form though so you can respond easily. Click on TOOLS then ACCOUNTS, then the NEWS tab, then on the right is a box called ADD, then enter the info as it asks for it. When you are finished it will show up under your email folders in the newsgroups folders. You enter a different address to retrieve the messages though. Instead of say "POP3.localserver.net", you might enter "NEWS.localserver.net"

Katrina, when you change providers, make sure that you can access NG throught them and ask them where their instructions are for using Outlook Express to read the newsgroup. If, for some reason a technician has to come to your house to set things up, make sure he shows you how. It really isn't difficult, but you do need the info from your provider about their newsgroup server, etc.

Aol does not provide usenet access so you either have to use google groups or use a usenet provider. Although there are free servers that occasionally allow posting they are often unreliable and limited. I would recommend the server at the Univ. of Berlin. You can sign up at

and the cost is about $12 and some change for a year of service. I have been using this server for at least 6 years even though my ISP provides supernews at no additional charge. It is dependable and when you switch ISP's you can keep the account if you want to.

Thanks for the info. I will be dumping this aol soon. Now I know to ask isp's if they allow access to usenet groups.
