Sorta OT question...

My new Granddaughter will be arriving on July 25. Her mommy has picked out a Walmart bedding set called Butterfly Kisses, which is adorable & takes the load off me of making the entire set for the room! Still doing the curtains & some other things, though, including Waxing Moon's Roots & Wings as a Birth Sampler. Butterflies, flowers, hearts - it'll be perfect!

I'm wanting to surprise them w/ a few rugs replicated from the motifs in the bedding set but done in punch needle. I've not done punch needle for 100 years, & not sure what kind of fabric to use as my base. I'm thinking I want something heavy enough to be sturdy - maybe a congress cloth or canvas of some kind? I'm afraid monks cloth will be too thin & light weight. When completed, I plan to paint a rubber backing on it.

Any suggestions on where I can get info on punchneedle rug supplies?

Thanks bunches for any help anyone can give.

By the by, monks cloth is the recommended backing these days -- a relatively firm kind, about 12 squares to the inch. Latex backing is

*not* recommended. It's not necessary as long as you keep a decent gauge and it tends to degrade, get icky and shed after a few years.
