While I think that the paint chip idea is cute...I have to say that I understand why Home Depot keeps the samples under lock and key. The paint stores have to buy these samples/chips and they do so that potential customers can have them. If people take them when they have no intention of buying paint, two things occur....1) it's unrecoverable expense to the store and 2) they won't have the chips available for those people that really want/need them for their intended purpose. It's really not that hard to cut a req stips of cardstock to make "pretend" paint chips. Or invest in a square punch. OK...I'm stepping off my soapbox now... Good point Susan - I think if there is a rash of people taking samples, they will either start charging for them or lock them up. I have a ton of samples, but only because I can't decide on colors at the store and have to bring them home to see in my house! I just don't throw them away..and never remember to take them back!

Since we have done quite a bit of painting in the last year, DD has become a paint chip collector. But I tell her she can only have one so she better pick the best one the first time!! She asks how come she can't have more since there are so many to choose from. And I asked her how she would feel if she came in looking for a special color and they were all gone because another little girl got there first and took all of them. She seemed to understand then. But that doesn't mean she won't trade out that one chip many times over while we are in Lowes:)))

Susan. I agree with you 100%.

I saw paint chips featured in a magazine a while ago and I thought it was a bad idea from the beginning. I have no problem with incuding paint chips from a redecorating project in a redecorating layout, but hoarding them is another.

Bottom line is *nothing* comes for free and the $$ comes from someone's pocket somewhere.

I was in Amarillo on Saturday and I went to Lowes to get paneling to do our extra room in the barn, john deere look and I snuck over to the laminates and asked the lady that was stocking them if she had any WILSONART laminate samples and she had never heard of them. Wilson art .com does custom laminate, they have samples in bark, grass, peppers, popcorn, chocolate chip cookies, chain link fence, paper, water, and other items. I called their number and got 5 free 3" x 5" size samples. I gotta say they are cool. I got peppers, popcorn, coffee bean, modrain, and gaja. Also while I was at lowes I checked out their paint chip section and I felt like a kid in a candy store. I had never noticed how many they had before. I got a few handfuls of this and that. But what caught my eye was a new one called EARTH ELEMENTS They are about 3" square samples that look like sandpaper. It comes in about

15-20 different colors.. It sparkles, It is a paint that you add granite crystals to and it makes the paint sparkle. They sell the granite crystals by themselves. Kinda like ultra fine glitter. I also noticed bigger paint chips in about 4" x 6" samples ion several different colors. Last but not least they have nickelodeon colors with Oswlad, Dora, Blues Clues, and Spongebob on them. Don't worry I didn't raid the store of their free samples...I left one of every color for someone else!.....LOL NOT!!!... I was easy on them. Like I said a few handfulls only. hehehehehehe
