I beat the heck out of mine several times. Oh say 5-10 times. Then again. I may be doing it wrong too.

I whack my good and hard 3 or 4 times. I can kind of feel when they are set and no more whacking is necessary. Don't be afraid to whack away and practice on some not so pretty one if you need too.

Eyelet beater here, too. Got a lovely twisty eyelet setter thing last year from my secret Santa (thanks again, M-C!) but it doesn't give near the same satisfaction as killing the eyelet with a hammer! :-)
