I am currently sewing with some very fine polyester and chiffon
materials and have been recommended using lingerie thread.
What is this and where is it able to be purchased please?
Daisy.
Don't assume malice for what stupidity can explain.
It's a finer thread that is as strong as regular thread, created for
sewing light weight fabrics. It usually comes in neutral colours. It
should be available from any good thread outlet that supplies coned
threads for sergers, as this is what it's usually used on.
It's a long staple poly thread with a higher tensile strength than
regular poly sewing thread. Dunno how they do it, but it IS harder to
break than standard Guttermann poly thread, that I can say from
experience.
Very likely: not having subjected it to microscopic examination, I
wouldn't like to say for sure, but that's certainly the impression I
get.
It's great stuff for serging sheer and semi-sheer fabrics, as the
reduced thread bulk makes finer seams. Trouble is that a standard size
LOOKING cone costs 3 times what a similar looking cone of 120's poly
costs as it has 3 times the length of thread on it! I don't do enough
bridal stuff that needs it to be able to justify the outlay at present,
but if I ever see it going cheap on special offer somewhere handy, I
shall nab 4 cones straight off!
