We went through the same thing when my son was a teenager. I then bought him a prepaid phone and told him I would buy him a $100 (1000 minutes) phone card every 90 days. He used all his minutes in the first month and then had to wait for 8 more weeks for minutes so he learned to pace himself after that.

I got an extra cell phone earlier this year for my hubby and the kids to share. Hubby still insisted he didn't need one, but I find myself getting calls from it. I have Cingular and the extra phone was $10 a month more. We share minutes as I don't use a lot. Any calls made mobile to mobile are free. That's where we save. I have 2 friends with Cingular and we get free mobile to mobile too. I got the extra phone just for the kids and hubby to stay incontact with me. When they start wanting to text or make other calls we may have to do something else.

I think it depends on how much you use it. I bought my Mom a t-mobile prepaid phone a couple of years ago just in case something happens when she is out in the car. I loaded it with a $100 card and the minutes are good for a year. She rarely uses it and every year at Christmas I buy her a $25 card and she is set for another year because the minutes carry over. For her it costs $25 a year for a cellphone whereas if she had a plan it would cost her every month just to keep the service.

Disney is coming out with one as well. You pre-program certain numbers that the phone will only accept as outgoing calls.

911 is automatically preprogramed into it.

I have Cingular TOO!!!!

I have tried over past 5 years 4 different companies and their service, including customer service is the best. I should know as I drive everywhere! But like everyone out there, their phones can not see over mountains or in valleys either - LOL!!

OK Dave all calls will be MTM from now on. Why not use the free minutes.
