Which Digital SLR is better for the money

I know this was discussed not so long ago, but I've just changed computers, hubby is getting my old one and when I downloaded the messages, I couldn't find anything.

I am looking at convincing people to pitch in and get me a digital SLR camera paying less than $1000 and with lenses to zoom in and

Do the lenses from my old yashica and my old cannon non digital slrs fit on these digital slrs?

Which is better the rebel or the Nikon D50 or D70. If you look at bedford.com they have a $999 package on the D50 including a couple of lenses. Is this a good deal?

I'm hoping to take some classes after Christmas at Bedford as they are well known around here.

Thanks for the help... need to get back to family today or tomorrow as I've been procrastinating!

You're only talking about the Rebel right? Or any Canon SLR? Because I own a Canon S40 which took one heck of a tumble in Banff a year ago (I thought I had the wrist strap on, and as I got out of the car I swung my arm and my camera went flying, hitting the cement sidewalk and denting the corner of the camera really good) and it still works perfectly fine. It's a metal camera, not a plastic one.
