alter pattern to maternity?

Hi,

awhile back I remember reading about altering patterns to become maternity patterns. was it the pivot method? and extend the front at least 6"? I don't want to buy a bunch of patterns if I can alter or even draft some (yes, I am cheap! I don't mind spending time over money)

no, I am not expecting, thank goodness! Just want to make some maternity clothes for a friend. The darn clothes are way too expensive, and who really wants to wear sweats and your DH's big t-shirts when you go out or go to work?

Thanks,

In the dim and distant, I made most of my maternity clothes from just two patterns. One had a skirt, trousers and biiiig shirt, the other had dungarees (made up in purple jumbo cord - they looked grand) and a pinafore dress (what you colonial lot call a "jumper"). I too objected to bought preggy clothes - not just the cost, but the crap fabrics, rotten sizes, poor quality make, and fubsy frumpy styles. Ooops. Someone gimme a hand down off the soapbox?

LOL here is a hand down~ I think maternity styles are very nice now, very trendy. Thats why they cost so much. When I was pregnant I bought a shirt at 50% off from Thyme Maternity here in Saskatoon, made from some guazy stuff. I paid $50. It was something I could have made for less than $10. After that I made myself some maternity clothes. I have one pattern to work off of, but the shirt is not so nice, and there are about a million pieces to it.

I would buy one or two very basic patterns, one bottoms and one tops like Kate mentioned........and work from them. Seems to me it would be nice to have the basic shape to start with, and they alter and trim them to match the "very latest thing" in maternity wear. Awfully nice of you to do this for her.

Hello, I actually decided not to buy patterns. I drafted/altered 3 items already. a pair of pants altered from a pattern, just converted to low rise and put a big t-shirt style waist band.

And I drafted a halter top with a collar that snaps in back! (very sexy I hope) and a handkerchief hem skirt made from a rectangle and again a t-shirt waist band. all from pinstripe suiting.

I even had enough to make a similar skirt for myself! (I am going to wear it for the next week because I love it! LOL maybe just today)

I think I can handle altering now that I tried it! The drafting is easy enough if I keep it simple.
