altering a pattern?

So I finally figured out the pattern and put together a muslin of the NL skirt (6345), only to find it was WAY too big. I was warned that simplicity patterns are usually cut larger than the size printed on the envelope, but went ahead with my size anyway. Unfortunately, going down a size won't really help because I used the size 6 pattern. So my only hope is to alter the pattern pieces to fit my size. Is this very difficult? Will I need to buy another pattern kit (as i've already cut out the size 6 pattern)?

Also, can someone please explain "ease' to me? On the pattern it says "ease is the diff bw the standards body measurements for a size as given on the envelope back and the finished garment mesaurements as printed on the pattern tissue." And below this it says that the hip on the 6 pattern would be 36.5. (which to me makes no sense bc the envelope says that that the hip should be 32.5.)

The 32.5 is the body measurement of the person wearing the skirt.

36.5 is the measurement of the skirt. The extra 4 inches is the ease.

Some of it (about 2 inches) is wearing ease....unless the skirt is cut out of a knit fabric, you need to have some ease in order to be able to move in the skirt.

Beg, borrow, or steal a friend for an hour or two - preferably one who sews, but not necessarily - and 'pin fit' the pattern to you, marking where the new seam lines need to go. Last time I made Simplicity patterns, I needed to hack about 8" out of them! GRR! WHAT a waste of time!

As for ease, hit the URL in my sig line below, and look up the chart for ease allowances: it will tell you what to expect in the way of ease from the garment description on the pattern envelope.

Ease is the difference between your body measurement and the pattern size for those measurement: if you make the garment fit you exactly, you won't be able to move or breath in it! Simplicity seem to be particularly bad at it! I complained, and they sent me vouchers to try again.
