Are there any advanced sewing class in Atlanta

Hello, My mother is having empty nest syndrome and she said she was interested in learning more advanced sewing techniques. I don't really know anything about sewing, but my mother has created some very nice stuff, and seems to be more advanced than beginner classes that I've found through Google. I wasn't really sure where I could find some classes for her in Atlanta, GA. I looked at some colleges, but them don't seem to offer any of the classes I was looking for. Sorry if this is pretty basic, I'm sure there are advanced different types of sewing, so I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. I know she doesn't want to do knitting, and quilt making, but I'm not sure how to classify what she does. I found the below site, and a few more like it, but they don't seem to offer any of the advanced classes she said she was looking for. I guess the closet thing I could come up with would be like advanced dressmaking, but I'm not sure if that is a real classification. Thanks for any help offered.

Dear Zipper,

All the stuff on this website is pretty basic, and not dressmaking. I have a dear friend who teaches at Savannah School of Art and Design. Her name is Jackie Kueler. You might have your mother contact her, tell her Teri Jones referred her, and she may have some contact in the Atlanta area who can help.

Savannah is WAAAAY far away from Atlanta -- several hours' drive at least.

I know that, but you don't have the class over the telephone.

One thing to look into is the local chapter of ASG (American Sewing Guild). They have an Atlanta chapter here is thier website

website also has links to local atlanta vendors, some of which have classes. In addition to the store link you posted. I am a member, in NM, and can say most guild chapters have "special events" that bring in national speakers for advanced classes. Many of these guilds are also in close contact with the local vendors, (fabric and quiltshops) and are informed about what type of classes they offer. And just because you are not in quiltmakeing, don't immediately discount the quilt shops, some of them do have a few garment classes. From using industry techniques to patern drafting. Also most guild have "programs" at meeting where you can learn new information from each other. We also have discounts availiable to many vendors, local and national. There is also a national yearly convention. All in all the yearly "dues" more than pay for themself in the benefits of membership.

Aside from the "organized" guild meetings and such, you Mom will meet a group of women (and maybe a few men) that share a hobby. In our group there have been some friendships made by people that may have not therwise met.

Oh yeah..and the ASG National website..is:

In case anyone other than the OP wants to see if their is a guild in thier area. I know other sewing guilds exist internationally, simply because we have had "visitors" from them at our national convention, but I don't know any of their acronyms.

They are based in Atlanta and they have several folks on staff who do sew. I would be willing to bet if you called them, they could point you to some classes for your mom. Really nice folks tell them that the sewing boards pointed you in their direction. ;) I'm sure if they can they will help you.
