i had a pair of jeans i bought used in college (for $1) in
1972. i carefully patched them for 4 years. one day i was on a trolley in Boston & an older woman sat next to me. she admired my handsewn patching, but gently remarked that when my patches started needing patches, it would be time to retire my jeans. i also did the triangles in the seams to make bells, but i never could figure out how one would get them to fold out of sight when not moving...i tore two small holes on my hip on barbed wire once & used a red flannel with lions rampant to patch from the inside so the lions showed in the holes. i still have 2 yards of that somewhere... hmmm.
