kung fu uniform

Hi All, I am a long time lurker here and have appreciated all the great information. I haven't contributed because there is such a wealth of experience here I don't really know anything more to add. My 9 yr. old is taking a beginners kung fu class. the class is only $30 dollars, but the uniform is $60. Need I say more? Problem is, the kung fu uniform is different from the basic karate uniform. Pants are the same, loose drawstring w/elastic waist. The top though has an empire collar and frog closure. (not the wrap top seen in karate.) The uniforms they order for the class are made up in white twill. Any ideas on where I could find a pattern? Thanks, Amy

I agree with Val, ask some other parents if you can buy an old top from one of them.

They have a lot of things. But nothing with a mandarin collar. I have seen what you mean, but not on beginner students. So the school you've chosen for him is unique. :)

Can you borrow a top from another parent for a few days? That would give you time to make a pattern of your own. If you've ever made a kimono type garment before, you know how easily they go together. It won't be hard to figure out.

Butterick 6697; Children's Asian Wardrobe - it has the mandarin collar jacket with long sleeves and frog closures.

I'd advise against making it, the proper Kung Fu outfit has alot of extra room that you wouldn't find in a pattern like this. Theres extra room in the crotch and under the arms otherwise while he's training he'll split his uniform. I've also never seen the same material they're made from, nothing near as tough which could be a factor when he starts using weapons.
