books

Is/are there up to date books that describe different materials, and what they're good for? I have an old old book that has some, but I don't think they even sell material under those names any longer.

I used to take my MIL fabric shopping (she passed away 2 yrs ago, at 97 years). She had been an interior designer, and clothing designer. Quite often, she had different names for material.

Many fabrics from the early 20th century are no longer made, and we have a few new ones. The last book of fabric names I have is the Butterick Fabric Handbook from the 80s or 90s. It's a paperback.

Sharon - The ones I'm aware of are Sandra Betzina's "Fabric Savvy" and "More Fabric Savvy", and Claire Shaeffer's "Sew Any Fabric".

I'll add to what Chris mentioned, Claire Shaeffer's Fabric Sewing Guide, and the Fabric Dictionary series by Rain City Publishing: All About Wool, All About Cotton, and All About Silk. These are especially good because they include swatches of the various types of each of these three fibers: the Wool book has 35, the Silk 30, and the Cotton 40 samples. (Who knew there were 40 different kinds of cotton?). I've learned a lot from them.
