Grelimns in the machine -- Help!! --

Hey all, looking for some expert advice here. My girlfriend tries to sew any material, and after 3 - 5 atitches, the machine jams. When she raises the pressure foot to take the material out, there is crazy amounts of thread stuck in the lower area where the bobbin is being held. So much thread is there, that the thread cannot move, and there's a crazy snarl in the "shuttle case" behind the bobbin.

I know absolutely nothing about sewing, but following the manual for threading the bobbin and machine, I cause the same issue.

What could be causing such mind numbing, tension raising, almost breaking machine action, and can anyone suggest a remedy? Any and all help would be appreciate. If I'm not explaining myself well enough, I can take pictures to get the idea accross. Thanks in advance for any and all help!!

You did not say what kind of machine. It could be a number of things to include an improperly wound bobbin, bad or improper thread in either the bobbin or the needle, improper threading up top, a bad needle, heretofore unseen bits of thread or fuzz in or around the bobbin case (this may require some disassembly as instructed by the manual), not securing the threads at the start (depending on the machine).

G'day Mathew

Do you have the top thread going through the tension discs correctly? Do you have the foot raised when threading? (this opens the discs so thread can lay into the discs correctly). As Phae has mentioned, do you have the bobbin threaded correctly?

Check these things and post back with the results. Hopefully we'll get it sorted between all of us.

Might be a tension problem. Same thing happened to me on a SM I had borrowed. Was just that someone had been playing with the tension and loosened it too much. HTH Barbara in SC and now FL

I've had this happen when the thread has come out of the takeup lever. Liz

Hi Mathew,

What model machine is it, and do you have the manual for her machine? =20

This could be as simple as having the needle in wrong, or having the machine not threaded correctly; but the instructions for both will be in the manual.

This site also sells manuals, if you don't have one.

Also, has the machine recently been serviced or cleaned? If not, overdue maintenance could also be a culprit because things such as lint wads under the needle plate will interfere with sewing action. Here's a do it yourself guide:

II had a similar problem yesterday. The thread somehow came out of the tread path. I turned the spool around and the round thingy that holds the spool secure and it solved my problem. The spool was to loose on the spindle. I over course didn't come to thatrealization until I rewound the boobin and changed the needle. Juno

Thanks all. After many frustrating hours, I decided to RTFM, and lo and behold, I figured out we actually weren't threading the top bobbin properly. After reproducing exactly what the manual called for, it worked like a charm. Thanks again for the helpful information!

Yeah, for Mathew!

When all else fails, RTFM is a good plan.
