Crepe backed satin

I'm thinking of making my 14 year old daughter an outfit for her brother's wedding with crepe backed satin. I'm looking at butterick pattern 4021 which claims to be easy.

Does anyone know if it's worth buying the material cheaply from a UK ebay store ( £2.75 to £3.50) or if I have to spend £8 or more from a 'normal' shop to get something decent? Bearing in mind, I don't know if she'll wear it again !

Also, how easy is this kind of fabric to work with? Any hints or tips?

I've worked with velvet before but not really anything as slippery as this.

Many thanks

Susan

Dear Susan,

Crepe backed satin is easy to sew if you pin it to paper (I use tissue or newsprint (blank)). Leave the pattern pieces on the paper until you're ready to go to the sewing machine--don't unpin the pattern pieces. And this goes for all of your sewing projects. Leave the pattern pieces on the fabric until ready for that piece to go to the machine. If you use tissue, you can sew through it, and remove it after stitching each seam. Either line the garment, or use french seams or hongkong finish to keep the garment from fraying. Even a one-time wear deserves a good finish--it doesn't take that long, and the superior results are worth the extra effort.

Hi Teri

Thanks for replying.

Do you have the paper on top of the material between it and the pattern?

That makes sense. I think i had to do that when I put a zip in the velvet robe I made.

And I wouldn't want it to fall apart in the middle of the dancing!!

Thanks again

Dear Susan,

One of my students was to be a bride's maid, and the dress was ordered from the bridal shop. When it arrived, none of the seams was finished--not even pinked--and the cost of the dress was almost $300. It was made of taffeta, so when you breathed on it, it began shredding. We tracked down the RN number inside the dress, and called the company to complain. The name of the company was Just Pants. No wonder it didn't know how to make a dress!!! The person who answered the phone was very perturbed that we found out who it was. Anyway, she got part of her money back, but not all.
