dissolving thread?

Is there a thread that is thinner than those small spools of dissolving basting thread you can find at the usual sewing shops? That stuff is expensive! I'd like something that is closer size to actual sewing thread, maybe even embroidery thread. Having said that, is there something that can dissolve cotton or rayon but won't hurt wool?

*crossing fingers that there's a scientific type in here*

Dharma Trading Company carries some stuff called Fiber Etch that will dissolve plant fibers but leaves silk or synthetics intact. Call them and ask for specifics about wool.
