Hi, I'd like to turn a carpet remnant into a DIY 40"x40" throw rug. I have a Bernina 1080. What do I need to bind the edges? Is my machine capable of this? What presser foot/settings should I use?
The carpet company wants $2 per foot for installed binding which I think is a bit much. There's a product out there called InstaBind which uses hot glue, but plus shipping charges the cost is about the same.
Any advice appreciated.
This is not the time to be money-conscious.........it will cost more to replace your sewing machine than it will to pay the $2.00...........get it done professionally.

You might be able to find a local home-based workshop doing mats but certainly DO NOT use your Bernina for this job! You will most definitely kill it... and your cost to replace the Bernina will far exceed the cost of getting the guy to do the job...

OK, by your numbers a 40"x40" piece of carpet equals 160 inches or 13.33 feet time $2.00 is $26.66. You can not even get the Bernina cleaned for that much. The machine that is used to sew binding is a very expensive, the portable ones go for $2,000.00 to $2,400.00, machine. It is a special heavy duty machine, uses a special needle and these machine break frequently. I know this as fact as I service most of the carpet binders in my area. Drop the $30.00 bucks, get a nice professional job and save your Bernina for something it was intended.
If it was me, and if I didn't need to be real fussy about it, I'd just fold the edges over and lay it flat. If the corners bulge up more than you like, you could cut some material out of the four corners . . .
That's what I'd do. I'm cheap that way, which is why I'm better suited to be your next president . . .
