Emergency trousers!

In the midsts of all the other mayhem that is my life right now (hubby away 3 days a week, three large frock projects - wedding dress, MoG dress in 5 colours!, Miss Havisham extraviganza!) I discover that the lad has grown out of ALL his britches except two pairs of school uniform trousers and his newish jeans! A week on Tuesday he's off to Scout camp for 4 days... The next few days will be filled with boys trousers, skirting board painting, and getting ready for next weekend's guests.

I have dug out two patterns from the loft, ordered a third (coz the one he's grown out of is the one he wants most, with the zippy-off legs!), and extracted 4 bits of trouser making fabric from the stash. I may have to buy zips...

It never ends... ;)

What, you don't have a "I bought this zipper for something, now what was it?" stash? I have several 19" zippers in bright yellow, if they would be of use. :-\

Though possibly NOT for a scout camp in the English climate! If I had more time (and cash!) I might go out and BUY a couple of pairs. As it is, I'm stuck here with limited transport and a pile of fabric...

First pair cut out yesterday afternoon while cooking the dinner. Second pair cut out before 8 am this morning. One pair is the same colour as a shirt I'm half way through for DH, so that might also get done! ;)

Hey, if David beckham can get away with one, and blokes all over have adopted the kilt, why not? If only... Somehow, NOT this kid!

I have about 150 zips in the stash. Unfortunately probably NOT a pair of light weight separating zips in navy or black in the exact length needed for these trouser legs... Bummer, innit! Still, a good excuse to go fabric shopping! Hm... I'm out all day Thursday, on a trip to a quilting supplies emporium and Hobbycraft, the sewing/craft superstore! I'll write a shopping list! I can surely whizz a couple of zips in while stowing sewing machines and making beds up for visitors on Friday! :D

As Becks does not play for Arsenal, I don't see young James following his ideas on fashion. As t'lad once said: Beckham should stick to kicking balls: at least he's good at that! (This from a 12 YO!)

Has anyone used Kwick Sew 2820? It's the one I ordered for James's zippy-offs.

Well, the first pair are done, all but the elastic in the waist and the hems, both of which need to wait until James gets home from school in a couple of hours.

Second pair is on the way: these have a fly front and six pockets, two of which have pleats in, and two of which form belt loops at the top... Hm... WHY did I buy this pattern? ;)

I've steamed my fingers and singed a black mark onto the ironing board cover. And my coffee is playing host to 3 penguins and a polar bear. I think I'll take a break and paint a window!

Tell him he's genetically predisposed to wearing a kilt and he can just deal with it. ;)

You are such a good Mom! I'm knee deep in the "my pants are too short" syndrome over here too. Fortunately, it's warm enough now that I can just say "wear shorts!" for a while. ;) I can put off the pain of having to buy new jeans for a few months. (school gets out the 1st and they don't go back till August 20!)

Good luck, Kate!

If they were just too short, I'd hack them off above the knees and make shorts out of them. Unfortunately, he's grown out in all directions! The ones I've just made (they will be finished off tomorrow - I took some time out to curl up on the sofa with James, some quilts, the cats, and the TV: we have a regular Monday Night date with New Tricks - a very daft cop show! :D ) were Men's Medium! 32"-34" waist. They have a little room for growth and will get generous hems!

Good thing: He's still a cuddle-bug!

Bad thing: he's an inch and a half taller than me!

Good thing: I inherited a 'hoodie' he outgrew!

Bad thing: he steals my Lush Bath ballistics! :D

He may end up well over six feet tall, but he'll always be my cherub!

Much like my DGS, who always greets me with a big hug and a kiss, even in front of his high school peers! And he is now taller than I am, but he'll always be a sweet little DGS to me.

Elastic fitted and hems marked.

Ready for fitting last night: legs too baggy, so need to skim them off a bit, put the lower pockets on the outsides of the legs, put the waist facing in, the belt loops on, and hem up to match the others...

Today's tasks:

Finish olive drab breeks with elastic waist.

Unpick (my LEAST favouretist sewing task!)* legs of stone breeks and taper: re-sew with lower cargo pockets in place.

Press washed T shirt fabric that has cuerled up round the edges!

Cut T shirt from curtled up fabric for pal.

Make T shirt...

Hem up gouchos for pal.

There will be two more pairs of breeks when the zippy-off pattern arrives. Should all be done by Tuesday Morning next week! :D

Paint landing skirting board and radiator, and possibly window frame, if the sewing goes well!

*Actually, I think I may just slice the excess off and only unpick the bit left when most of the extra fabric is on the floor! :D

Ho hum... Proof positive that doing things in a panic doesn't work!

Olive drab twill trousers now complete, but! Erm... Yes... No, it's OK, they do fit and they did come out nicely in the end, but...

First I forgot the in-seam pockets! Silly me! Just need to unpick the top part of the seam and insert them... But I was interrupted by the phone and when I picked them up again they got turned round, and I didn't notice until I'd sewed the pocket in upside down to one ankle!

The stone ones are also complete, but only after unpicking the waist round the zip TWICE because I couldn't see what they wanted me to do with the top of the zip! These trousers have a fly front but no waistband: the waist is faced. And as I made the shorts pattern into trousers by elongating the legs, they came out REALLY BAGGY and James said it was like wearing a pair of skirts - one on each leg! So I had to go back and slice a chunk off each leg...

Now I just need to hammer some poppers into the pocket flaps and sew a button to the inside of the fly to hold them up when the zip is undone...

For my next trick: a pair of black polycotton twill jeans! I dare not say that because I've used this 25 YO Burda pattern twice before that it will be easy... ;) Hm... Sewing archeology, anyone?

I drew round a jumper for the pattern for a T shirt for a pal, but the fabric isn't as floppy as the jumper, and clings a little closer than she likes for comfort, so the next pair or so of T's will be cut looser. Luckily this was a gash bit of cotton jersey with Lycra that I found lurking in the loft... She loves the T shirt, but it's just a leeetle closer round the tummy than she likes.

The cullots/gouchos pattern for my friend came out really well (trial of pattern with some gash poly knit I found in the stash!), so I have just gone ahead with her next pair and cut them out... She's short, so I hacked 5" off the bottom of the pattern to make them mid calf rather than ankle length. This is Simplicity 3793 (the knit gouchos, view C but without the tie belt), and very nice it is too. We are awaiting another Simplicity pattern for another pair to be made later.

Some years it's REALLY difficult to get decent clothes for work when you are 5'1" and well into the plus sizes. I needed to make the goucho pattern a bit bigger, but it worked well, so if any of you are looking for something like this in the larger sizes, this one works nicely and is easy to alter if need be. I'll try to persuade her to pose for pix for me so you can see them: I'm very pleased with the way they look.

Right: I'm taking the morning off sewing until I get that painting done... See you later!
