All right, I've had enough of lamnated stock...

Hello all,

Well, perhaps I haven't had *quite* enough of laminated kiln-dried stock, but I would like to try out turning a burl or two. I did a google search on finding some, and got about a billion hits. Anyone have a good suggestion for finding some decent turning blanks online from a reputable supplier? Preferably, I'd like to find Maple or Western Red Cedar burl, but anything nice will do for now. I don't need any giant hunks of the stuff- approx. 4"x4"x6-9" would be superb. I'd like to say price is no object, but I'm closing on a new house in a couple of weeks, so it really is an issue right now. I'd say I've got $30 or $40 plus s&h that I could scrounge up for the right hunk of wood. I'm not so sure that I've got the confidence to try turning wet quite yet (I'd hate to have an expensive blank ruined due to lack of experience) but I might try it out if I can find a good faq on the subject.

Any good advice and/or links on the subject?

Thanks!

Well, Prometheus! If you'd come down from the mountain top and let us know where you lived perhaps that could help us give more specific advice!*G*

You may want to try "ncwood" as user name on ebay,, I have used them several times in the past and have found them to be reasonably priced,, with good service. Just do a seller search with that name

Hi Mac

Yes Mac, I'm in Ontario, a bit better than half way to the east coast. To bad, it's a long way, to your place, the best my son and I ever did was just over 45 Hrs driving from the west coast to my place in Ontario, with a moving van (HD pickup with a big box). There must be all kinds of wood in California I would think ? Maybe you'll have to take a drive around and talk to some park people. Where do other turners get their wood ? do you have a turners club in your area ? Yes transportation makes for expensive wood even if you would get the wood for free.

Sheesh!

If you're that close, come by my place in the UP with your pickup.

There's an AAW chapter forming up around the Hurley border area, too. Lots of people to trade wood and lies with.

:) Thanks for the offer, but mapquest gives me a 4 hour drive to Hurley. Might be worth it for one trip, but that's quite a haul for my old Dakota!
