Fabric for jacket?

I'm looking for an appropriate fabric to make for a jacket to be used for horsemanship classes at horse shows. It will be an unlined jacket that should have a little stretch to it. Sugguestions would be appreciated. Cheryl

cheryl..

welcome to my world of frustrations . the best thing is to just go and wonder through fabric stores. I'm still in search of the perfect fabric! black stretch gabardine is plentiful, other colors not so much.

are you using the suitability patterns?

Betsey: There is only ONE fabric store within my area and I have already been there...nothing that I want. I do not use Suitability...in my experience their sizing is rather bizarre (lol). I use my own pattern that I have developed over the years...I just alter it to accommodate the project I am working on. I'm looking at various websites, and will be ordering swatches where they are available. Do know of any websites that have the stretch gabardine, or maybe twill? Cheryl

What sort of horse shows?

If it's equestrian, then it really should be wool and it should be lined.

cheryl- fabric.com is a good one\ also if you go to the suitability website, they do have links to several fabric online stores...which will swatch for you.

i'm trying one of their patterns for the first time. i'm a chunk, so it could get dicey

fran- if you are riding hunt seat or dressage, it can be wool and lined, but if you are riding western--such as showing in hand in showmanship or in tack in western pleasure, horsemanship, or reining, etc...there is a whole host of what is considered in and correct right now. wool not being one of them.

I like stretch twill. Lots of colors here as well as a couple of prints:

AQHA shows. And no, I won't line it, or make of wool. I show in the summer and it can get quite hot! I'm not going to the "World" show, so something cooler is in order. Cheryl

Well, gosh darn it, denver fabrics has every color except black, which is what I want! A gazillion navies, but no black. It must be the wrong time of year for black. Interestingly, the fashion fabric club had the identical web page as denver fabrics...are they one and the same company? Thanks for your help...if you know of any others, I would appreciate hearing from you. Cheryl

I think they merged a few years back. I ordered from denverfabrics.com for DD's wedding (2004), shortly after that they had a big sale to clear out stock, and as I recall the reason was that there was going to be new ownership.

Fabric Depot (local to me, NAYY) has black stretch twill:

Mill End Store is also local to me. They don't have an online catalog, but their staff is very knowledgeable and I'm sure they could help you if you give them a call:

eBay seller has some:

says black, but I would sure want a swatch, it appears dark blue on my monitor:
