Fabric over leather sofa cushions

Hi there I hope someone out there can offer me some advice.

My leather couch is in good shape except for the cushions which have surface scratches. I had a professional try and repair the damage but it looks like it was a temporary fix and I have decided to try and sew fitted fabric (chenille) slipcovers for the cushions to prevent further damage. That way I can keep the leather look as well as introducing some other colours.

My question: I would like to slip the new cushion covers over the existing leather but it seems as though it may slide around when it is sat on. Is there anything I can put between the leather and the fabric to prevent this from happening? Something that will not harm the leather? The lady at the fabric store suggested that rubbery "fabric" you can put in your cutlery drawer to keep things from sliding around, but she didn't know if it would harm the leather over time.

I could unzip the leather and put the cover directly on the foam underneath but I was wondering if there might be an alternative.

Thanks for any help. Jeannie

Lasher, I too have leather furniture, with a dog! The surface scratches to me give more character, but sometimes they can look nasty. I don't know what your "pro" did, but I found the best solution on my own. Try using a neutral shoe polish. I don't know what color the leather is, but mine is oxblood, and I did a sample polishing on the ottoman with the same color polish, unfortunately the color comes off on your clothes. So I tried the neutral polish and it works beautifully. It gives the leather a beautiful, like new sheen, prevents against spills, and protects. It is not so slippery you fall off the furniture either. It does require some elbow grease though, polishing a pair of shoes is nothing compared to a room full of furniture. I use a drill with a buffing pad on it now, much easier! And you can get a real nice shine on it. I also keep cotton throws on the furniture during the winter as a quick cover up, but have also noticed that they also help to polish the leather when people sit on them and they move around. So if you want to cover your cushions, I would recommend a breathable fibre like cotton. And your guests will be helping you at the same time! Good luck.

I saddlesoap my leather furniture once a year, and that covers any scratches. You can try moisturiser too - any old thing you've got hanging around (I used some L'Oreal that a guest had left). Obviously, try it on a discreet part first in case the colour changes...

For summer, I cover the box cushions on the seats with covers made from cotton drill. They don't move around, but they're held in place with a long strip of velcro at the back - if you make sure the seams are in the same place as any piping on the original cushion, that helps hold things still too. I wouldn't take the leather covers off the foam as it's the Devil's own job to get the leathers back on again afterwards. I had to do this when one of my cats pee'd on the sofa, and I seriously wouldn't recommend it!
