Fish Leos Done - Show Pics

After being out of town for a few days for a wedding, I arrived home in time to finish the fish leotards.

While out of town, we visited a marine science center, where I studied how fish fins work. I added removable blue tulle fins with silver stripes.

I've added pictures from the showing to the album.

Today I have been piecing together a First Communion pew banner for this Sunday. I am reminded of why I am NOT a quilter.

Thanks, this was a showing of scenes from "The Lorax." They are supposed to be "Humming-Fish." I decided to abandon the brownish Dr. Seuss look and create a more brilliant fish. There are narrations from the book interspersed with dancing. Only one child complained about not being brown like the fish

Silly child! I loved that fish scale fabric where on earth did you find it?

I imagined what I wanted and hoped it existed somewhere I could buy it. After lots of searching a variety places, I found it at Spandex House,

Thanks to sewing for the whole class, I met their minimum order. I ordered enough to make 11 leotards even if I could only lay out 1 1/2 across. As it turned out, the printed portion of the fabric was wide enough for me to put two across, with slims next to pluses, so I have a good amount of extra. This is a fine thing since I have requests. Even though one had dropped and there were only 10 in the class I've already made an 11th so my 2 yo can match her sister.

Looking at the pictures, I wish I had been able to measure all the girls. Depending on their moms to choose one of my sizes after trying the ones I brought on their girls did not lead to a uniform fit.

Betsey,

Those are truly wonderful, what lucky little girls. I would imagine the memory of these leotards and their performance will be with them for years to come.

Thanks for sharing, I love to see your work.

That's a very nice site, bookmarked, thanks!

No, NO, NOOOOOO. Never sew from someone else's measurements. EVER!

I learned that lesson the hard way with the first set of bridesmaids dresses I made. After that I had a policy of only making dresses for women/girls I could measure myself, though I occasionally would make a muslin based on other's measurements if I could do a fitting and do my own measuring before making the real dress.

Because of my mix-up about the month of this showing, I only realized the showing date was 2 weeks away after the class 2 classes before the show. I was going to be out of town for 3 days the week before the show. I couldn't wait until 1 week before the show to measure them at class and start making them. I only measured my own child and one other who lives close by. No one measured the other girls.

Based on the two girls measurements and my memory of general sizes of girls in the class, I altered the pattern, making slims, regulars and pluses. I made leotards before the next class and brought them for the girls to try quickly before class started. I brought my measuring tape prepared to measure girls who didn't fit one of the ones I brought.

As it was all a hurry before class, the mothers looked at their own girls in the leotards they tried and decided whether accept that size or try a larger or smaller one. All of the moms were happy with one of the sizes I had brought. I was busy writing down names and sizes and didn't get to see most of the leotards on close up.

I made 7 different sizes of leotards in all, 8 if you count making the chest slimmer in the additional slims I made after the fitting.

This is the first time I've made boy-leg leotards in plus sizes and I think that I need to experiment more with developing a plus sized fit. I think the plus sized leotards looked a bit better in the fittings, but when the girls moved, the legs tended to ride up.

Thanks, we were lucky that our dancer got really sick the day after the show, not the day of the show. We have been languishing all week and she can't wait to go back to preschool and all her other activities.
