HELP!

Mt Singer, circa 1969, died...again. I think I need a new machine, rather than "fixing" this one again. So.... I have a Brother Embroidery machine, that I am most pleased with. I need another machine that will sew. Nothing real fancy. Just plain stitching and perhaps zig-zag. Any suggestions? THANKS!

Look for a Singer 401 or one of the variants (free arm, fewer built-ins) or a 503 - the last of the metal-geared Singers, but with zigzag capability. For a straight stitch machine, the Singer 301 is a winner.

There are other "oldies, but goodies" such as the Pfaff 332, SuperNova, etc. These can often be found for under $100 and almost anything is easily fixed - even by the owner.

Probably not for one of that vintage. Really, not worth it for anything they produced after about 1964...

If you want a new workhorse that will sail through stuff like that, but doesn't bother with anything but a basic range of useful stitches (rather than rafts of decorative stuff) try a Bernina 1008.

Depends...what model is it? If it's an early 600, perhaps it may be worth it, as these were the last of the all-metal gear driven models. If it's a later Touch & Sew model or a "Fashion Mate," "Style-o-Matic" you are probably looking at plastic gears that are typically split and crack by now.
