ideas and advice for make believe box ?

I am trying to put together a better (i.e. updated gender ) make-believe box .

we have a make-believe box from our no longer "Mr. rugratedness" which basically had lots of boyish things like firefighter hats, crowns, capes, ropes, netting and a variety of fabric panels with animal prints/fur/vinyl/etc

now i need to **add** to the existing box (as the other stuff will stay) i just want to have better coverage for the "girlish stuff" and thus the request ... what sort of things to add for girls. I know there will be lots of pink, purple and sparkly stuff and i was thinking of adding some brightly colored simple tutus and things like that or maybe i should just add some fabric panels with a greater variety of colors and patterns ?

So any suggestions on what extra stuff to add for the girls, she plays with the firefighter hats/coats already i just wanted to make sure i did not deprive her the "girlish stuff" as she has started doing the balerina impressions and wrapping herself with loose fabric and calling it a dress and so on.

I guess i should have put all that stuff in when mr. was a rugrat as he has already found creative use for things like the glowing lime green organza covered in sparkly reflective sequins and the bright cyan sheer voile panel with embroidered vines and leaves.

Go to Goodwill. Old prom or bridesmaid dresses. I had a couple of old strapless sundresses with wired bodices that I snugged in tight with a couple of seams that my daughter, her friends and my son's gal pals absolutely loved.

Little girls always love mom's cast off clothes. Dress, shoes, handbags, old jewelry. A tutu or 2 or three. Just pick up some tulle, gather with elastic and your a hero. My DGD also love things like Mom's graduation, robe, dad's old shirts. This is a link to some free costume patterns, you might find some things there. go about 1/4 down the page.

Costume jewellery - again see if your local charity shop has necklaces, brooches, rings etc. Some sort of sparkly head-dress to be a princess, dancer, fairy, bride....... Magic wand - stick with a sparkly star on the end. Medical dress up stuff - a set of scrubs?

Some of Kate's fairy wings - I'm sure she'll post the link ;-)

The fairy wings are really NOT for kids for dressing up. They were designed for adults, for stage use. But they were fun, and the method could be adapted, so here you go...

I was thinking that a smaller version could be safely adapted by someone like Robb. I entirely understand your NOT clause being in there . Lizzy

Dear Robb,

and an outrageous hat from the local thrift shop.

I picked up an actual mink shrug from the thrift shop for $20.00. Over the last 15 years it has made regular appearances in dress-up games at home, middle and high school plays and as part of various Halloween ensembles, including, memorably, the cloak of fur over a werewolf's shoulders (you have to think outside the box). It has also been worn twice as a coverup by bridesmaids in winter weddings.

Ah - but, I got DD a feather boa, and had to take it out of the dressing up box - it was too scratchy!

DD has a variety of stuff in her box, and I really must add to it and improve it someday when I have time.

DD has a doctor set, a couple of fairy / princess dresses, police set, fire hat, builders hat & hi-vi, a few bits of children's jewellery, a wand, a pirate outfit.

She does enjoy the dresses and the doctor set best.

Thanks Lizzy, for the ideas. After reading the replies we went to the thrift and overstock stores and picked up a couple of your suggestions (from clearance shelves of course) kid friendly sparkly jewelry like stuff , tiara etc. . Funny how they know exactly what to do with the stuff, just make it available. The wand is a craft project now drying. I had made some scrubs for the older one but your suggestion reminded me that i wanted to make a lab coat. and thanks for shout out to Kate for wings

Oh, we had a cardboard top hat in ours, my dad made it for us. It had to be mustard coloured because we LOVED the Doctor Dolittle cartoons that were on TV in those days. Also we were great fans of 'The Onedin Line', so the top hat was essential, and not only my brother got to wear it. So much for 'gender'. ;-)

i understand the warning (pointy wire). I suppose the safest kid alteration is run the wire all the way around the wing perimeter or make a large rounded loop at the wire ends to maintain the light, airy and whispy fairyness of your design ?

thanks again robb
