inserting elastic, cords

Would like to know the easiest ways of inserting elastic and cords? Momtaught me to hook a safety pin to the end and push it through.The problem is that I have no feeling in my fingertips and it's difficult tofeel the safety pin. My husband has done the job for me on occasion, but Ireally hate to bother him if there's another way.I love a particular jacket pattern that uses a drawstring in the bottom. Imade one out of corduroy and had a terrible time getting the cord throughthe bottom. The local fabric shop recommended a long, plasticthing-a-ma-bob that you insert the elastic/cord in and then push it throughthe fabric. Well, I've tried the thing-a-ma-bob on several different itemsand it doesn't work that well for me. Most of the time, I am insertingelastic or cording in heavier fabrics, like corduroy, denim, or heaviersuiting. It would probably be great for lighter weight items.Ideas?Thanks much,Cindy, in WV
