LITF: toys

Living in the future:

I walked through a dollar store yesterday, and in the paper-and-pens department spotted a pair of "school scissors" -- almost lying on a counter; dollar stores get more like dime stores every year. Still a bit short of the real thing, and it's not just me: back in the sixties, I thought I'd outgrown dime stores until I went back of beyond sightseeing and found a dime store that couldn't afford to update, and the fun was still there.

What caught my eye was that these scissors looked like little Fiskars, even to having a fingers loop different from the thumb loop, though (presumably to avoid trademark violation) not quite the right shade of orange. The handles stuck out of the package and I opened and closed them the little the packing allowed, and they *felt* like scissors that would actually cut.

Now I wish I'd bought a pair so I could try them and see. It's about time children got tools that really work.

I have a bunch of children, so I bought a bunch of these. They are a great improvement over the school scissors I grew up using. They actually cut well and can even cut fabric if it isn't too heavy. They aren't nearly as strong as Fiskars, and I wouldn't buy them for sewing, but they can substitute for better scissors when the kids have lost the good ones.
