new Queen intro

I shall henceforth be the Queen of Scissors.

I had to make SOMETHING up when I signed up for n.i.n and used Ms Peacock from the game Clue. The girls always get to play Ms Scarlet because she goes first. And I am NOT Mrs White.

I'm 4 kid's gramma, I have two feline QI and one hubby.

Oh, and dark chocolate please.

Ms P, Queen of Scissors (I really do have a LOT of scissors)

Now wait just a minute. Before you accept your crown, methinks you will want to consider the obligations and responsibilities of queenhood. My gosh, is that a word or is Sunny going to come after me? (At least I didn't say 'nor' or fail to capitalize Nazi.) As Queen of Scissors, what are your qualifications? Simply having a lot of scissors around is not enough. The Dollar Store can do that. Do you have opinions as to the latest and greatest? I've been thinking of buying a new pair, perhaps two. I see claims from new brands, sizes and edges. Defend your right to the crown. What say you? Welcome! So, er, how many do you actually have? I realize this is a very personal question, and maybe you don't know me well enough yet, but curiosity has triumphed over good manners ;-) Dark chocolate is also my favorite! Roberta in D, Queen of the Scrap Heap

One word, Dovo. Wait!!! Bohin too!!! Gorgeous scissors both! I don't think even the dollar store has as many pairs as I do. At least I've never seen a store that has as many pairs as I do in stock. There are a couple of places on the net that have as many and there's a vendor at quilt shows that has tons of scissors.

Seriously, I can't recommend Dovo or Bohin enough. If you can't afford either of those go for the Ginghers.

The tortoise shell handle scissors just a little ways down this page are going to be my next acquisition. And then theres that Dovo set.

I'll tell you but you can't tell my hubby!! He'd keel over dead if he knew how many pairs are in this house!! LOL

Right now I have 71 pairs of scissors. The day I counted I counted 65. Then another pair came in the mail and I found a pair I had missed. Then I went to a quilt retreat and another pair came home with me. Then I bought three more pairs.

My Dear Queenliness! Then you are probably the *perfect* person to ask .... I have seen ads for batting scissors (in some magazine that I can't find now ... you could probably crown me Queen of Quilting Magazines, I collect'em so passionately!!) - scissors that are bent in such a way that seem to be perfect for the job (and supposedly so sharp that they cut batts like butter!) ... do you know of the best scissors for the job?

Right now, I have a dedicated pair of Ginghers for the job, but they get dull so quickly ... and I'd like a pair that are easy on the arthritis!! :)

Hugs!! Connie :)

Hmmm .... do you want pictures of the stacks and boxes? Or would you like to test me with quotes from particular issues?? :)

I have 7 moving boxes full of quilting magazines dating back to the seventies. And upstairs (cause I still read'em!) I have the equivalent of 4 moving boxes full of magazines from approximately 1998 to present!

I've got loose ones under couches, beds, closets, and even a few on my kitchen shelves! On my nightstand (which is actually a bookshelf) I have 6 piles of'em, about 20 in each pile! I'd show you pics of THAT, but our room's so messy, you'd call to have our home condemned!! :)

I went crazy when I started quilting back in the nineties and trolled eBay buying up back/old issues of every quilting magazine I could find. I even have copies of the old Ladies Circle Patchwork Quilts magazines!! I've always been a nut for reading ... so it just translated. :)

Do I get the crown? Or do we have to wait to see if there are other claimants to the throne?! :)

Hugs!! Connie :)

welllll.................. I am in the process of sorting the stuff that DH put into boxes. Including several bankers boxes of magazines. Have to go through them all because some books are mixed in. That doesn't count the ones on the bookshelves in the cutting room, or the ones that are in the "being read" pile. I collect, books, magazines and fabric. among other things. But I am going to sort and get rid of some of them. I hate to but I really do need the space for other things that are more important at the moment.

DH did find an old copy of Sew News, from when it was tabloid size..... thought I had all of those in a box, and I know which box and where it is.

See my replies to Polly and Roberta. They should answer my qualifications for the title.

I'm really torn which are my favorites, the lovely pair of Bohin or the three pairs of Dovo. After getting those I'll quit saving the Ginghers for the "good" scissors and just use them!!

71 pairs and counting.

I've given a FEW away ... it hurts, to be honest, to give away any reading material - 'specially my quilty magazines. I think that if I have one idiosyncracy (though I know I have more than one!!) it would be magazines. And since I started quilting, it's magnified tremendously.

Example: I often can't wait for a subscription magazine to arrive - if it features a project that I just HAVE to start on, I'll buy it early. Thus, I have at least 40 "repeats" - which I usually just give away (since I still have a copy). My DD needed some magazines to cut pics out of for art and I let her use the repeats ...

My hubby KNEW they were repeats (cause otherwise I won't let anyone mess up my mags) and was quite upset (to say the least). The only time he got more upset than that was when we moved several years ago and he had to help me with the mag boxes (that was about 2 moving boxes ago).

I'll bet that most people in this group have more fabric than me ... nicer, fancier machines, nicer tables/work spaces, but I'll state with confidence that I doubt many have as many, if not more, mags than I do! :)

(And yes, while it's not on the same "subject" I have Sew News dating back to the nineties and Threads magazines dating back to the 80s! - but I'm not counting them as part of my quilting mag collection!!)

I treated myself to a pair of Dovo embroidery scissors (the stork shape) a couple of years ago, and I have to say that they're the nicest ones I've ever had or seen! I tried some Gingher embroidery scissors before buying them, and they were stiff and clutzy to use -- and I love my Gingher shears, so this really surprised me. I've never tried the Bohin scissors, but I've heard from others that they're really nice. :)

Thanks for the link, Ms P -- it could be dangerous. ;)
