Mompei pants

I have just made a pair of mompei pants.

Thank heavens I intended to wear then while working in the garden - they are Japanese 'field' wear after all! I followed the instructions to the letter as to how to get the right roomy fit and, TMWOT, they would fit the back end of a bus.

Ah well, at least the length is great and I can bend and stretch and carry a fat pig or a load of weeds inside the pants if I must. Perhaps as they get old and are washed more they will 'drape' better.

And you didn't misplace your sense of humor either!!! Always a good thing to keep track of. *sigh* What directions did you use? I have this book

The directions for fit come out well on kimono and haori. But I've not tried to make any pants from his directions. You do have to flip back and forth and try to figure out what he's talking about some times. Took me forever to figure out one place he was describing a French seam.

Sorry it took me so long to respond Sharon. It took me some time to find the instructions again. My sewing room really, really needs a tidy up. If you scroll down to the Mompei pants, you'll find the instructions I used:

I will use these instructions again, but I will reduce the hip measurement used.

Well, I'm sure you have solved your challenges by now, so I guess this post= is for anyone, like me, who comes across this discussion in the future. T= he mompei (or monpe) are made really, really roomy in the seat so that, tra= ditionally, folks could tuck their kimono into the pants while they were wo= rking.=20 If you're not stuffing in excess clothing, contraband, pet pig, or oversize= d bums into the pants...yes, adjust the measurements.

These pants were discussed a week or so ago. I have deleted the post, so I don't remember exactly when. Barbara in SC

Months and months and months ago, I posted about some Mompei pants I'd made. I said that they could hold 2 of me so perhaps this person is responding to my post - except that the response would now be so far out of date, it'd make sense that they might be responding to my post given that they are commenting on fit.

Just for the record, I undid the waist band and sewed a side seam that took out a lot of excess fabric. They are now 'relaxed fit'.

Hm , I'm sure I must have missed that one; I'm always interested in pants patterns that might fit me. So, if it's too wide for you it might just fit me ('Holds two of me' sounds just like it). Did you use a pattern and if so, which one?

I drafted the pattern and I think (but can't quite recall) that I found out how to do it on the internet - I know I did lots of googling before I did anything and I'm a very bad puppy aobut putting notes on anythign I draft so even looking at my pattern wont' help me to give you a cite.

I know that Folkwear have a pattern, but I certainly didn't use a 'real' and 'paid for' pattern. Basically, I think if you thought about how you'd draft a really sloppy pajama pants pattern then that would work OK at least it would if you arent' too fussy about fit. I'm certainly not these days because I spend my days gardening and doing all sorts of grubby farm work and I want comfort or loose fit jeans style pants for my lifestyle. I'll spend some time googling and see if I can find anything I recognise for you.

Ursula, check out this site:

The pattern there for the mompei pants looks near enough to how I drafted the ones I made - that straight sided seam was certainly a part of the ones I made.
