Need Ideas for sewing gifts for boys

I have three nephews I'd like to make Christmas gifts for, but I am at a loss as to what to make for them. The nieces are easier..they like dresses, clothes for their dolls, etc. I'm totally blank for the boys, though. They are ages 6, 8 and 14. Last year I made them all wall hangings for their bedrooms, which were a big hit. I'm a intermediate level sewer.

All ideas and suggestions are very much appreciated!!! Thanks!

How about fleece sleeping bags for indoor fun? The boys can play camp in the living room with these. I "hemmed" a fleece blanket with a circus scene for my sons who are too young for sleeping bags; very colorful. On my to-do list is a plan to sew a felt "house" to go over a card table, complete with windows and a door - your nephews might be too big to play house tho.... how about organizational hanging pockets for each of the boys' beds? Always room for storage.

It would depend on what they are into. With all the popularity of Pirates of the Caribbean, some kids (and some not so young "kids") are having fun with wearing cloaks and muslin "artist" shirts.

There's always the pajama route. On the average night we usually wear a big T-shirt, but once in a while someone gets inspired by love or marketing. One year my mom made my daughter and I matching nightgowns and nightcaps. What a hit that was :-) We wore them until they literally fell apart. I wonder if she was inspired by the year I was eight or nine when my grandmother made me a bathrobe. It was wonderful. We haven't always been a close family, and we haven't always had the time or inclination for making a big deal out of the holidays. However, those times when the spirit hits can stick with a person for years and years. Not everyone has the time or inclination to sew. It's very special to get something like that that was handmade just for you. Anyone who is sewing for kids or their parents could very well be passing on (or starting) a multi-generational hug.

Xena, first thank you for the great idea of bathrobes! I like it! And you are quite perceptive, too! That's exactly what inspires me to do this...my grandma made oodles of stuff for me, some of which survives to this day (and I am 50). She taught me to sew on her Singer 66 treadle, which I now have. I made all my dreses including prom dresses in high school. My passion has inspired one of my nieces to want to learn to sew, so last year I picked her up a Singer machine at the thrift shop, oiled and adjusted it, and presented it to her in a carrying bag with loads of attachments. It isn't a fancy vintage model, more of a 1990's, but it does zig zag, and some fancy stitches and is free arm. We went to the fabric store, and I showed her how to use it, we had a blast. She ended up making two pretty pillows for her godmother's birthday, which I KNOW was special treat for that person (who is another aunt),

I used to make stuff for the neices and nephews every Christmas, until my own kids started taking up so much of my time (and the older kids got to be teenagers). They'd send thank you notes, but I had no idea what an impact the gifts made until a visit to one home--there was the Scottie dog I'd made the girls one year. She said her cousin also had hers in her room! That was very sweet, to know these grownup girls still have my gifts, 15 years later.

My son still uses a drawstring bag I made him at least 30 years ago. It is tough GI green 100% cotton drill, about 10" diameter bottom (double), 12" tall, with several interior pockets. I used boot laces for the drawstrings; they are still working! He will on occasion allow his DD to borrow it for carrying small toys on a car trip.

If you're signed up with Hancock Fabrics, don't forget that this weekend you can use their 10% off total purchase coupon -- which can also be used on sale items.

I forgot about this Monday's 30% off coupon for a cut of fabric and I'm still kicking myself!

Or just some really cool pajamas on their own! DS *and* DH have gotten new pajamas (matching) for the past 2 years. They both think it is cool....and DH isn't what I would call a "boy" any more....40 before you know it!
