I just googled 'sewing lessons' and got a large amount of stuff. Some is actually for advanced study but most seem to be for a novice audience. However, I did not see one that is local to me that advertises regularly in the sewing magazines. So I put the name of the town the person lives in and came up with it right off.
Hope this helps, AK in PA
Depending on what level or stage you want to introduce to them, you may want to consider a no-sew project to make clothes for dolls. My friend developed this and uses it with her neices; her mother also uses it with children at a local school that she works with. In both cases, the girls learn (very) basic concepts of construction and they get to personalize things a bit. The technique involves preparing a 'kit' for the sewers-to-be prior to meeting with them. When you are together with the young sewers, you can supervise while they velcro back and front pieces of a garment together, add embellishments, and dress their dolls. It's been a big hit for both sets of children (the neices and the local students), and the article has also gotten some very positive feedback from the forum where it is posted
I taught sewing to both adults and children for several years. I would look at the Sewing Prose pattern system. It is meant for either sewing teachers or parents to use, and helps the kids to build on skills, with a reward system built in. The patterns are cute, too, and developed especially for kids.
Thanks Karen, that looks like it could be useful for my boys.
