Free Online Sewing Courses/Sites?

I'm 22 and new to sewing, I can do some things alright but I really want to learn as much as I can and would like to design and make my own clothes. Do any of you know of other sites were they have discriptive tutorials? Any help would be very appreciated. -Viola Holladay

for free lessons. Also

has some free lessons on their site. You can also check out taunton press for a link to Threads magazine which has some lessons online. Also craftandfabriclink.com has a free sewing book that I have read. Sew News magazine also posts some free articles from each edition. Better Homes and Garden website has free sewing links. HGTV.com has free sewing lessons. Sewing with Nancy website has some free videos from the TV show that you can watch. I think Ladies Home Journal website and Woman's Day website, as well as Good Housekeeping may have some freebies on there too. Also

(Joanne Fabric Store) has all kinds of free patterns and projects you can do. Lots stuff out there if you know where to look. Also, don't forget your local library for sewing books.

forgive my rank amateurish responses ... but sometimes that gets the ball rolling :)

unless i misunderstood the OP question Isn't that sort of like asking if there are any books on how to write poetry or fiction or a book on how to be creative ?

In my rank amateurish analogy with other creative endeavors, i don't think one learns creativity/design as much as one is inspired to creativity and design.

sure there are the technical aspects which can be learned from studying others work but the creative "design" part and even the application of technical aspects to one's design is personal

i think one crude way to become inspired to design is to make others work until you get a slight grasp of what the technical problems of sewing and garment construction for form fit and function are. Then maybe get the most basic and fundamental pattern styles and modify with personal style etc. and so on

but i am just a rank amateur so YMMV

I filtered the sew girls, google groups and other riff raff out long ago but i *DO* see the replies to that stuff ...

since there was no internal time mark/stamp i would need to track down the OP's OP ....

hopefully i helped someone or will troll up some corrective opinions :)

I suspect it's sewgirls.com. I sure wish all these folks who have suddenly "found" and "joined" alt.sewing would find better access. I have most of sewgirls.com kilfiled.

I see a link in their posts all the time to SewGirls but what is this site?? And (sigh) I'm part of the Google riff raff. sniff-sniff. I just don't understand how to set up a newsreader on my laptop or I would. Learning brain surgery in 3 easy steps looks easier.

is this

or I

sorry , you are not riff raff as i have your ID in a sort of

**keepfile** as opposed to killfile ...

and by riff raff i meant the people who happen upon and pop into alt.sewing, pose a question and never return to read answers or respond to responses (i.e. share) unfortuneately these pop-in-outers mostly come through google groups and portals like sewgirls.

i suppose i should go find a yahoo sew group but i like it here in alt.sewing

Thanks that makes me feel better. But some groups I visit also have all posts from Google killfiled and only see my posts if someone has responded and quoted. And I can see why because many of them do exactly as you have said "hit and run" posts. And Google can be the home of thousands of spammers I've observed. Not that everyone that has a Gmail address is a spammer, but the spammers do seem to love their service.

Setting up to get your news from a server rather than a web site is as easy as it was to set up your email.

Contact a service like motzarella.org and open an account. That's a free one. There are others, both free and with small charges.

Then go into your email program to the News portion. In Thunderbird you use Account Settings under Tools in the toolbar. Once you're set up, you need to "subscribe" to the groups you want.

Here's a page showing how to set up the newsreader -

It's for SFF.net, but you just replace that with your server. You also probably don't want to call yourself "Betty Boop." ;-)

I belong to a few Yahoo groups. There aren't many with such life and diversity as this. They are mostly special interest and OK if you fit in.

That's a whitelist. A killfile is an example of a blacklist, so the derivation should be obvious . . .
