Novice sewer with big ideas but lacking in expertise

I would like to make a table runner for my nephew's girlfriend. My question is this... instead of the usual v-point end, I would like to do a scalloped edge... eg. if my runner is 17 inches wide, four scallops across would make each scallop 4 inches wide... allowing the remaining inch for seam allowance, how do I accomplish this, please help.

Does your sewing machine have a scallop decorative stitch you can use? If not, you can experiment with various curved edges you might have in your kitchen---coffee cup, plate, bowl---to mark the finished edge, and then use a satin stitch to finish the cloth edge. HTH Barbara in wet "up state" SC

Yes, many items in the kitchen can be used to get the correct size scallop you desire. I would experiment with paper (newspaper?) first to get the correct size and number of scallops. It's a little easier to fiddle with newspaper before finding the correct size and if you mess up, just get another sheet that's as wide as you want the table runner to be.

Breeze,

Have you thought about making it in two layers? I mean, sew two pieces together - like a long skinny pillowcase, only each end would be scalloped/curved, rather than straight. It would take more fabric, but it would mean you didn't have to try to do the super-neat satin stitch...... I made one that way. Use the newspaper for your curve pattern (good idea!), clip closely to the inside of each curve, leave an opening along long one side (near the middle), turn it rightside out, and then whip-stitch the opening. Press the whole thing and you're done!

Just another idea, y'know?

Thank you to everyone who responded with all your ideas, they are fantastic. There is a product here called 'pelon' it's French for "Idon'tknowwhat" :). I will make a trial run with that as I would have with the newspaper... To make the curves I purchased a compass (at Wally world) to draw the scallops (with that I can be accurate). I have purchased the fabric, and a lightweight liner and also a contrasting colour for the opposite side. Now all I need is a group hug and a big push to give me confidence that I won't muck this up :) God bless newsgroups :)

Hugs and gentle pushes on the way. We all need those sometimes. Good luck!
