pillows

I have been volunteered by my daughter to make pillows for the high school band color guard. There will be about 30 pillows to be used for dancing during the Aquarius number (this year's theme is the 60's). The director wants the pillows to be 24" x 24" and fluffy. The pillows also have to be washable. The director suggested Velcro closure so the insides can be removed and the fabric can be washed. I saw 1" foam at JoAnn's that was for outdoor use but the director doesn't feel 1" will be fluffy enough. My thought construction thought is to overcast 3 sides of the pillow and then add velcro to close the 4th side. I'll put the 4th side on the salvage so the edge will be prefinished. As for the inside this is where I'm stumped. It will take a ton of stuffing if a pillow form is not used! I've also seen plastic grocery bags used as pillow stuffing. I'm also thinking of keeping the stuffing or pillow form in plastic so that it won't get wet or muddy.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks, Suzanne

Would it be economical to make unbleached muslin covers for the pillows so you could take off the outside covers and wash them and not mess with the pillows themselves?

I have read about plastic bags being used as filling but don't know how to do it....it should be a lot cheaper than poly filler.... lots of plastic bags around.

I'd just shake them out and stuff them in -- it would be lumpy, but I gather that these pillows are just for show, and would be seen only from a distance.

I've never stuffed anything with plastic bags, but I frequently use them to cushion fragile things. Really convenient in my bike baskets because they take up no space at all when folded flat, but occupy a lot of space when crumpled.

Then there's the trick of using a plastic bag to suspend a tomato in mid-basket, with the aid of two bungee cords . . .

Some years ago I was in a show which called for giant sacks of something or other - I forget what. Anyhow, the prop lady got some large bags of the right type and stuffed them with crumpled newspaper. Worked a treat, not heavy, easily replaceable.
