wrist pincushions

I moved the furniture in the living room, and it's really awkward now to reach for pins and threaded needles while I do stitching in the evenings! Thus, I have made a couple of wrist pincushions, and they're working very nicely! (One stays in the living room by my chair, and the other goes into my small work basket I take out to the front porch to stitch while neighbors come to chat and sip iced tea and stitch on nice afternoons. We may not be a lively bunch, but we're social!) Anyhow, what I did is so embarassingly easy, uses nothing but scraps, and works so well I thought I'd share what I did. First, I took scrap fabric, doubled it, and made two mid-sized pincusions as usual -- you know, sew the bag, turn it right side out, stuff it with batting scraps, and sew the bag shut. However, before I stitched it down to the place of having just a very small hole for the stuffing, I inserted a piece of plastic to keep pins from poking through and pricking me, and for that I used a plastic lid from a Pringles potato chips can. You could use plastic you cut from a margarine container lid, but I thought the rim of the Pringles lid would be handy to keep pins from escaping the plastic shield. Next came the wrist band, but elastic isn't comfortable sometimes, so I made a simple 1 inch wide tube of scrap fabric that fits around my arm a couple of inches above my wrist plus 2 inches longer. After turning the tube inside out and closing that little hole, I stitched the pincusion to the wrist strap in the middle, and added Velcro as the closure. It works, it's comfortable, and it's free!

what a cool idea!! and making more than one is genius! i gotta try this. i could keep one in my "takealong" bag (stuff i do in the car when DD is driving). thanks!! amy in CNY
