What a treat to have another person who enjoys hand-piecing and hand- quilting! WELCOME!!! I currently have 2 bed-sized quilts in progress at the moment -- one pieced, with 72 pieces in each 12" block, and 81 blocks total, and the other is whole-cloth quilting. This afternoon I made myself another pin cushion for my wrist -- those commercial ones are awful! (What I do is make a band about 1.5" wide and about 12" long and slip a piece of plastic inside before I stitch up the ends. The plastic is cut from a margarine container lid, and is to keep me from accidentally stabbing myself with pins. It is about 3" long, a bit less wide than the band, and has the corners rounded. I keep it in place with a center row of stitches through the plastic and the fabric. Then I make a rectangular pin cushion with 2 layers of fabric, stuff it with batting scraps, and stitch the pin cushion to the wrist band over the plastic. Finally, I add Velcro to the wrist band.) I have a purely utilitarian wrist pin cushion I use here at home, but wanted one that looks good to take when I travel. I have a quilted tote bag I made just for travel, and it has a long, skinny pocket stitched to one of the ends on the inside for sunglasses, another two pockets stitched to the front and back on the inside, and a separate zipper pouch. There is also a quilted "tool box" with a zipper on 3 sides -- soft and squishable to take up less room when packed in a suitcase. Hand stitching is a great thing to do on board ships during afternoons at sea -- keeps me out of the casino, and is a great way to meet people, who stop to see what you're doing and stay to chat. People who do all their quilting steps on sewing machines don't have the pleasure of hand-work and portable projects. I even take stitching out to the front porch during good porch-weather! A bit of stitching, a pitcher of iced tea, and neighbors -- hard to beat! My QI (quilt inspector) is a delightful dog named Clara, a 7 year old mixed who-knows-what born with a crippled leg, but who gets around just fine and is 45 pounds of pure personality.

I may well come here with some hand-piecing questions you can answer, when I get going on my Quilted Diamonds project (should be this year!). I usually machine piece. While I don't hand quilt, she has provided much inspiration as to some of the elements of her approach to quilting that are transferable to machine quilting. You will find this group very accepting. Witness the fact that they accept me. Or as Groucho Marx once said, "I wouldn't belong to any group that would have me". Not so with this group. I do belong and they do accept me. Hi VickyB. Welcome! I'm pretty new here too, but started quilting in the 80s when Jenny was all the rage. I still do a bit of hand piecing, but graduated to power tools (it's a guy thing...).

I still dabble in hand appliqué so I understand what you mean about the process. It's the journey, not the destination. I don't own UFOs, only works in progress. I'm still working from time to time on an Elly Sienkiwicz (Baltimore Beauties) project from 1990. Ewwww... 25 blocks and 4 borders, 18 years, and still a work in progress. Maybe I shouldn't have admitted that publicly ...~:o)

Anyway, welcome aboard. Post early and often! BTW, where are you located. One of the members is keeping a map.

As to the questions, I'm in Michigan, south of Detroit. As for QIs, I don't have any of my own, but my dad has Bran, the Fat Black Lab, who lives here with us. You've seen those footstools in catalogs that look like black bears? She looks like that. Rather wide. :-)

No UFOs here, but that's probably only because I haven't quilted in ten or twelve years. Give me time, and I'll be a proper quilter again. I'll post pictures as soon as I have anything large enough to take a picture of. And anyone with hand piecing or quilting questions, I'll be happy to help. I'm partial to jewel tones, but am trying to get out of my old habits from years ago. I may even try applique this year ( a small wall hanging, at least).

Your Irish Chain sound absolutely lovely! I like to handpiece and handquilt too. So I always have a handwork project in amongst my machine work projects.

It's good that you can be there for your mom & dad.

The quilt sounds beautiful with the combination of the jewel tones and the muslin. I don't do any sort of sewing by hand but I do admire it from afar.

I think the map someone was talking about is the Frapper map, just go to Frapper maps and do a search for rctq. Or one of the many google experts will post a link for you.
