What are your favorite sewing machines where quilts are concerned? Does anyone do the piecing by hand anymore.

Short and sweet answers- Janome 6600. No- arthritis! ;-)

Janome 6500 ! Hand piecing is planned for when I do Linda Franz Quilted Diamonds. I have also done some English Paper Piecing, which needs hand-piecing. I really like it, actually. . In message , Marie Dodge writes
I love my Pfaff 6122. It was the best machine I could buy with no computer capabilities.
I don't know anyone in real life who pieces by hand, but Jinny Beyer has quilting celebrity status, and she handpieces and has written about it.

Why do you ask, Marie? Are you machine shopping? My past includes Singer, Pfaff, Viking, New Home (only a one-night stand) and Bernina. Choosing a sewing machine is a very personal matter and you will want the one that feels, 'ah just right' for you alone. Polly
Polly's one night stand with a New Home/Janome always tickles me. You see, I bought the machine she despised and I absolutely LOVE it--- it has everything I could possibly want in a machine, sews beautifully and handles just great. Just goes to show ya- test drive a LOT of machines and don't go by someone else's opinion. VBG

I always have a hand project to take along! As for favorite machine, can't say just one, the others would be jealous. Roberta in D

I love my Husqvarna/Viking machines. But they don't "fit" everyone. (Berninas and I don't get along and many really like Bernies. ) I still do a lot of hand piecing. Started when I did my first Dear Jane quilt, then Quilted Diamonds, and Inklingo and......... Still do a lot by machine, most of the hand stuff is small and/or odd shaped pieces. But I like to have something so portable so I can sit and stitch while visiting and so on.

I bought a Janome 6600 last June but my favorite machine for quilt type sewing is my Brother 1500. It just was a good 'fit' for my quilting needs. The reason I got the 6600 was I was the Brother machine had similar problems with thread breaking on FM quilting that Anne has been talking about (on another thread) That and I was looking for a machine with a nice buttonhole appliqué type stitch. The 6600 does that well. I never did piece by hand but keep a hand quilting project going most of the time ( I am slow at hand work so they last a good while)
My all time, all round favorite machine is my Bernina 930. It really is an amazing piece of machinery. Well designed and well made. I don't think there are many machines like that any more. I am hoping Bernina comes out with a machine that has a larger harp for us quilters but I have nearly given up hope.
Are you shopping for a machine? What are you sewing on now or what are you looking for?

I have three Berninas-- a 180, a 200 and my "take to class" 230--so I guess you could say my favorite is Bernina. LOL I started out about 25 years ago with a Singer Golden Touch and Sew. But didn't really start quilting until about 10 or 12 years ago.
Bernina 430, and Janome 1600p
Jinny Beyer has a wonderful book out called "Quiltmaking by Hand". Even if you never try to do it, it is worth the price because of the lush photos and layout. Highly recommended.
John
I second that book recommendation!!
Bernina 630 and -- for portability -- Featherweight. I do hand piece when I'm working on my Quilted Diamonds (Linda Franz's idea), and I enjoy it.
Howdy!
Favorite machine: the one in front of me, working.
Piece by hand: often.
R/Sandy -- piecing by hand long before JinnyB wrote a book ;-D
Beautiful! :-) I'm not sure I understood how to use the site but did see some real beautiful quilts there.
I have a New Home and was wondering what everyone else was using. I would have loved to keep my old Singer but the shop owner convinced us to replace it with the New Home - and charged us $600 for the new machine. I felt the price was excessive for a basic sewing machine. The old Singer *was* having too many problems. For now I'll keep the NH. If it goes I don't know what I'd replace it with. A friend of mine has an old used Brother machine that just wont quit.
Where I live that's no possible. There's only one store that allows a "test drive" here and they only sell Singers and New Home the last time I was there.
I didn't think many people were hand piecing anymore. It's very time consuming. My mother in law, may she rest in peace, did all her quilts completely by hand. Her machine stayed in the closet.
I have a Singer 99K that does a wonderful job of piecing. However, I generally do piecing by hand. I enjoy it. I can relax with it in front of TV. I can take it with me when I travel.
