presentable pincushions

Good morning! I have two "new" pincusions sitting by my favorite chair in the living room that I have no reason to hide when company arrives! Most commercially-made pincushions are ugly lumps of who- knows-what that don't work well, so I make my own, and the two "new" ones are great! First, the only new thing about them is the actual cushion piece that holds the stuck-in pins. The bases are actually small pieces of antique silver, one an egg cup and the other a toothpick holder, both cute but generally useless. I dug through some fabric scraps and stitched little "bags" with 2 layers of fabric to make them a bit sturdier, stuffed them with batting scraps, stitched the holes shut, and poked them seam-side-down into the pieces of silver. Pin cushions! They join my other sterling silver pincushion, which is a small footed bowl that was once perhaps the sugar holder from a coffee set, but which now has a reasonably tight fabric bag stuffed with batting scraps. You can do the same with teacups, but those can break if dropped, so my preference is for something unbreakable. And there is no reason to glue the cushion part into the holder, so you won't be causing any damage to an antique or feel as though you are stuck if you change your mind about the fabric you chose -- make another cushion or just add another layer of fabric. If I make another, I have my eye on an old dented silver "baby cup" sitting in the silver cabinet with no current useful purpose . . .
