Purple clouds! More reasons for being AWOL!

The six layer, five colour blackberry purple-->palest violet silk chiffon frock is finally all in one piece! The silk organza bolero is also done!

Hem level is marked, but I need to grade the layers... Also need to do a little finishing off of thread ends and the like. Interim pix on a new page about sewing seams in sheer fabrics in the Learning Zone on my web site:

'll have a little clutch bag to go with this to do in a few days. I'm also making it a gown bag as the silk will fade if left too long in daylight. That's the down side of silk like this...

Well, it's either bright sunshine or chucking it down in dollops here today! But the customer loved her frock! I have a little bit to do on her jacket (finish off the seam ends and press it!, and a little envelope clutch bag to make for her, for a week tomorrow...

The floaty wedding dress is also almost complete: the inevitable bit of hem to sort, and one other minor fidget to do with a strap. Next week she's bringing a flower and some velvet ribbon for the sash...

I still have a stack of cut out bits for my friend, but they have no real date on them, so that's OK! Several T shirts and a pair of gouchos. And I have a couple of bought pairs of crop pants to hemn up for her as she's very short. She runs me round all over in the car, to swimming and what have you, so I do them for love, not cash! :D

I dug through the loft yesterday and fished out some fabric, and chose... Well, several years ago I bought 2 or 3 Indian ladies salwar kamese suits sets of fabric: you know, a patterned bit for the tunic, a plain bit fopr the trousers, and a gauzy bit for a scarf. Well, from one of these sets I chose the georgette scarf bit, and with a little fidgetingh, and using the woven pattern down the sides as a decorated band across the top, I managed to cut out a party frock for me! I used the plain satin bit as lining, and have left the brocady bit 'for later'. :D I shall fling that together this afternoon, now I can take the purple thread off Bernie!

Miss Havisham's wedding dress is at the toile stage: pattern drafted and toile cut, ready to fling together this pm. Fitting 9 am Friday morning (I wasn't going to do anything sewing on Friday, especially not work, but my disabled customer has to come when she can get a lift, so... She's too nice and the project too much fun not to do this little thing for her! :D I dyed the cotton for the under layers last week, and ordered the silk for the top layer yesterday morning: it arrived today! Yay for Joel & Son of Church Street, London. Hm... Lookee here! A wee crowny thingy on their stationary! 'By Appt. to HM Queen Elizabeth II' no less! No wonder they are so good! But I did ring them up and tell them how delightful their silk chiffon georgette is when I saw it. Light as snowflakes, rich as ivory, and seriously delicious to work with! I'm most blessed in my customers right now!

I have 2 large chooks to roast, a large chunk of ham to boil, some butter nut squash and goats cheese strudels, low fat sausage rolls, and a batch of cakes and tarts to make for the party. I think a chocolate tart with cinnamon crust, a couple of Yorkshire cheese tarts, a Bakewell tart, a chocolate rum gateau, and maybe a pavlova or some macaroons... Oh, what jolly fun! As if I need a legitimate excuse to get sticky! :D On Friday we collect a whale. Well, really it's a large salmon, which I'll poach. I once wanted a large fish kettle for Christmas. Mum thought I was mad, but it gets used quite a lot! On Saturday we'll fling together a mountain of salads, a vat of fresh fruit salad, and I'll bake a pile of bread rolls.

Oh, and we have a footpath to lay! :D :D :D

Nah... I can cook and I can sew, and when I get in the right frame of mind, I'm a demon at housework! Fast and furious - don't get in my way or you'll be hoovered, scrubbed, and tidied away!

And the footpath is a serious cheat! :D This one:

Hehehe... Went to bed at midnight after putting a last load of washing on to do over night on the cheap electrons, and was up at six and in the sewing room by five past! I think I was up at five yesterday...

Stopped to wash, dress, and have breakfast after James went out to school at eight.

Sewing room almost straight after moving the treadle: I'll sew my dress up after dinner. Pasta with bacon and mushroom sauce with low fat cheese. I usually do this with broccoli, but there was a broccoli shortage when we shopped, so we have sugar snap peas instead! :D

I kinda remember being able to work/cook/sew/garden all in the same day. But I'll be 65 next month and now I can pick any two..some days any one. Today it was one...gardening - nothing else.

God bless you...enjoy that energy while you have it! I remember it well!

With the fibro I tend have energy spikes and lows, so I just take advantage of the spikes. I'm learning NOT to over-do it, though! That way lies a week of lows, and I can't afford that at the moment!

Thank you. I no longer TRY to do what I could do in my 20's, but I can do a LOT more than I could in my 40's, having shed 70lbs! It's amazing what extra energy shedding a third of your body weight in excess fat can do!

Today's tasks:

Complete my frock (shouldn't be hard - it's half done now!) Change a tenner into Euros for James (school trip to France on Friday!) Get the printer cartridge refilled! Do a bit of shopping for the party Get a couple of silk flowers for my dress! Sew a bit of the Miss Havisham wedding madness toile! Boil a chunk of ham Roast a couple of chooks!

Luckily the ham and the chooks can cook while I sew! And I'm babysitting for a friend tonight, so if I get to that point, I can do the finishing on my dress while I watch his cinema sized telly!

Wow, I've never run into the word "chook" before! I thought you had some really unique food to cook, Kate. I had to Google it - if it's not chicken, be sure to let me know!

And then you had me worried about the "whale", but only for a sec, as you clarified it.

Kate, that's gorgeous! I am amazed you were able to find six colors in the range you needed. I was drooling over that pattern when I was planning my MOB dress for DD's wedding, however, I could never find more than three colors of chiffon or georgette in shades of blue.

I really like how you made changes to the top and what you did with the straps, and the bolero is such a nice addition.

At times it was a total nightmare! The first fabric company sent miss-labelled samples and samples of colours they no longer do... Finding alternatives to fill the gap was a matter of HOURS on the internet and the phone! In the end we fiilled the gap by going to Joel

  • Son in London, who are By Appointment! :)

Thank you. Sue wanted something floaty and fairy-like, but with sleeves for the church and no sleeves for the evening reception. Her little bag will reflect the fall of colours and the slanted hems. I need to start that tonight!
