But how do you remember whether "right" is clockwise or counterclockwise, and from which point of view it's counter|clockwise?

I haven't experiemented with my camera to know for sure if I am understanding you right, but if it is as it sounds, it would probably be because you usually hold the camera with the back toward you and the lenses should be sensibly "righty tighty" if the camera is held that way.
