Sewing Gauge--Trishty

It's meant to be the measurement of Richard I of England - nose tip to fingertip. And his thumb was an inch. Does this mean he was a midget dwarf like me?

Years ago, when Pendleton still had very nice wool I would go to Oregon once a year for the factory fabric sale. All the people who where measuring would hold the fabric at the tip of the nose and pull out an arm's length and count ONNNNNNNE, and so on. The first trip with my friend's Mom who had gone for years shuffled me and my arms full of bolts of cloth to this one table on the far end of the building. I was just a bit miffed about not just going to the nearest cutting table and one with shortest line when it was pointed out to me......"look how tall she is!" Ah ha! get the longest limbed cutter available, they give you more bang for the buck. After remeasuring at home I found that I got 40-42 inches per 'yard'.

Wasn't it the Greeks who said "Man is the measure of all things"? Body measurements were the basis for many mathmatical measurements. I'll rummage around and try to find more info on this.

The Biblical CUBIT is the distance from elbow to finger tips.

The span was measured on a man's hand, actually.

But you made me realize: my span is 8 inches, and my glove size is also 8 -- when gloves came in sizes, the size was the number of inches around your knuckles.

So is this a co-incidence, or is it common for glove size to equal span?

Back on the topic, I find the maximum distance between my thumb-tip and index fingertip is just six inches. This has been convenient on many occasions.

I thinki it's just coincidence because I would be size 8 gloves too, but my hand span is 9 inches.

I measure a metre along my outstreched arm to the hollow before my shoulder on the other side.

My pinky width is 1.5 cms and forefinger is 2 cms.
