sewing room help - longish

I am not sure if this post belongs here or if there is a better place to post - although I am sure you will be quick to tell me where to go if that is the case :)

The youngest (20) has just moved out of the house - for the 3rd time :) - so I think I might finally be able to set up my sewing room and I need any help I can get. I am trying to get back into sewing after 30+ years of only hemming and minor repairs, with odd whole garment thrown in when time allowed. I really want to get sewing on a regular basis again as my wonderful grandson is a very 'sturdy' little boy and finding off the rack stuff that fits properly is not an easy thing. I also am tired of not finding anything for myself that I truly love. I have a large stash of fabric, so suggestions on how to organize this so that I can lay my hands on what I want ASAP are needed . I have a pattern collection ? maybe 50 ? that also needs a home. Some are still in the original envelopes; others have been used and are in zip style plastic bags. Both the DH and I are reasonably handy, but lack the time to do any job that takes more than a couple of hours. The room is shaped like an upside down L with a window where the leg joins the bottom and while the alcove(leg) has no window it does have a dimmer switch light. I have set up my sewing table against the wall opposite the door and have a small cutting table set up beside it so that I can take advantage of the light. I was going to use the alcove for my storage area as there is no storage other than a small closet already in use ? I am involved in community theatre and this is my costume cupboard. I have been scrounging entertainment units, microwave carts and a couple of dressers shelving units from family and friends as I knew there was no way I would be able to build any kind of storage, but the best configuration is a still a mystery and a place to start would be helpful. As it is in the basement and we heat with wood which creates a lot of dust ,I was thinking I would have to store the fabric in clear bags, but I am worried about it getting that nasty musty /storage odour, any ideas? If you have read this far thank you, and please offer any ideas you may have.

That rings a bell, the third time our son moved out I stripped the room so quickly he never got the chance to bounce back again, although he was two/three years older! :-)

We've found the most handy bit of equipment (one each) two smallish anglepoise type of lamps with halogen bulbs. They have 35 watt bulbs, and give a really bright light source when you're working. Main room lighting is also several halogen type spots, again for a sharp clear light.

Sounds like you might have a work table, we went for a nice big canteen-style table, with a metal frame and fairly thick melamine type of surface, nice and sturdy and steady when the machine(s) are in use.
